5 or 7,5 mm?

Posted By Nicolas Gomez Garay Vodder

I'm considering to buy an Ultima ep but I don't know which one to choose. I have a 10 inch f4,8 reflector. I want to be able to see details on Mars and Jupiter. Right now my highest power ep yields 120x.

What would you recommend as a first planetary ep, the 5 (240x) or the 7,5mm (160x)?

Is the 5mm useful for DSOs other than PNs?

What is the minimum useful magnification for seeing detail beyond the red spot and shadow transits on Jupiter?

I don't know much about the seeing conditions in my area as I'm not very expirienced yet but at least one night I have estimated the seeing to around 7 (could have been 6) on the pickering scale according to this link that also has been posted elsewhere.

Any help will be appreciated.

Nicolas.

Next accessory?

Posted By Nicolas Gomez Garay Vodder

I have earned 150 $ by working a little after school and would like to spend the money on new equipment for my 10” reflector. I have the following ideas:

1. A 9x50 finderscope (I currently have a 6x30)

2. A 2” focuser (I currently have a 31.7 mm)

3. A 30 mm Ultima eyepiece

4. Motor drives

If anyone else has another suggestion please let me hear it. I have a limiting magnitude of around 5.0 where I live. I don’t do astrophotography. Are there any problems associated with upgrading from 1.4” to 2” focuser? I already have a 25 mm eyepiece (48x vs. the 30 mm’s 40x) but the apparent FOV of the 25 mm is only 40 degrees which gives me a 25’ bigger field diameter in the 30 mm. Is that worth it (I don’t think my 25 mm would get much use afterwards with only 8x magnification difference). My 25 mm is brighter in some places of the field than in others. Is that because I have reached the lower magnification limit of my telescope? Based on this information what would you recommend me to buy?
Any help will be appreciated.
Thanks
