Orbit Refractor telescope

Posted By John Sellers

I recently came into possession of an antique 78mm refractor telescope that has the trademark "Orbit" written on the focuser. It appears to be from either the 50's or 60's. This is a very sturdy, well made equatorial refractor made of very good quality materials. I believe that at sometime in the past I saw this scope advertised in an Old S&T magazine but I cannot find it now. Does anyone have any information on this scope and what company made it?

I am considering purchasing these binoculars. Has anyone out there had any experience with these binoculars and the company offering them? Is the quality satisfactory?

Meade Instruments' 4" Refractor

Posted By John Sellers

Whatever happened to the old Meade Company's 4 inch refractor advertised in S&T back in the 1970's. I have never seen one advertised on AstroMart. Does any of them still exist? They looked just like Unitron's 4" refractor. Just wondering?

Looking for Honest Opinions

Posted By John Sellers

I've heard so much about the APO refractors such as Tele Vue, Vixen,Takahashi & Astro Physics. Currently I own a 6" D&G refractor & a 12.5 Starmaster; but really, how good are these APO refractors? I read where detail can be seen in the red spot, etc. Can these scopes with 4 inch lens really deliver such performances? Why do I see so many advertised for sale on Astromart? I'm thinking about getting one. I am strictly a visual observator and do not want to dish out the cash if I'll be disappointed with what I get. Help me think through this.

DGM Optic's OA-4.0

Posted By John Sellers

I'm looking for comments on the OA-4.0 inch reflector offered by DGM Optics. For the price it seems as though this is somewhat pricey for a 4 inch reflector, but I have been told that this scope's performance equals that of the 4" APO's. Then cost wise, does it make more sense to own this scope rather than investing in the more expensive APO's.

4.0" Model 420 Meade Refractor

Posted By John Sellers

I have never seen any of the older Meade refractors advertised on AstroMart. Are any still around? Back in the 70's Meade advertised in S&T their 4" refractor that resembled closely the 4" Unitron refractor. I am just wondering if anyone knows if any are still around? I've always been interested in the older scopes.

Removing OTA from Wedge

Posted By John Sellers

I am the owner of a C8 mounted on the standard wedge. I have a CG-5 equatorial mount but would like to remove the OTA and remount it on my CG-5 mount. How does one remove the OTA from the wedge? And will a CG-5 equatorial mount with wooden legs provide adequate support? Are there parallax rings manufactured to fit a Celestron SCT ?

Saturn

Posted By John Sellers

I know the focus at the time is on Mars; however, early morning of Oct. 4th I turned my 10 inch reflector on Saturn and got some incredible views of the planet just as the eastern skies were lighting up. The Cassini division stood out as well as I have ever seen it. Perhaps it was my imagination, but it seemed to me at times the ring actually broke up into smaller rings. At about 400x Saturn was tack sharp. One of the most beautiful views I have ever seen of this planet.

Best Eyepieces

Posted By John Sellers

I just purchased a quality six inch F10 Starsplitter solid tube reflector. I have many different telescopes but I have never had a long focus reflector such as this one. I will mainly use this telescope for planetary and double star observing. What would be the best possible eyepieces to mate with this paticular scope to utilize its maximun potential?

The Solar Eclipse

Posted By John Sellers

Hi everyone, I have the good fortune of going to the Mediterrean to view the solar eclipse coming up at the end of this month. My question: Will my Cannon EOS Rebel film camera be able to capture this event just pointing to the sun while completely covered by the moon ???
