Obsession Dob questions?

Posted By Mark Bungart

Chas,

I own an Obsession 15 with a Swayze mirror. Yes the truss tubes are cut to match the focal length of your mirror.
Usually, the mirror arrives directly from the mirror supplier ( Torus, Galaxy, etc). One less potential for shipping disasterssmile

Any questions or issues I had were handled professionaly and in a very friendly manner. Dave is a direct person, some people like that, some dont. I for one do. No problems with the scope.

It did take me some time to get comfortable with it since I had been a C8 owner for 15 years and had only really used SCT's. Once I became accustomed to "Big Dob thinking", I found that everything becomes second nature.

I love my Obsession!

air condition the primary

Darren, et al,

Ive been giving this some thought ever since buying an Obsession 15 a few years ago. The muffin fan helps, but Im thinking about placing those cool packs that are in first aid kits, or similar cooling packs to at least beging the cooling process. My wife is a nurse and brought home a several large cool packs that you squeeze and then shake to activate the cooling process. That combined with the fan may hasten the mirror's cooling a bit. I have actually tried it yet, but in theory it sounds goodsmile

Looking for more Aperture - and advice

Posted By Mark Bungart

Well, aperture always wins. I can highly recommend a 15" Obsession as one choice. It is slightly less expensive than a 14.5" Starmaster ( an equally fine scope). I'd stick with the medium range ( 12-16") to make it more user freindly. The larger scopes tend to require more out of you and thus you may not use it as much.

Anyway you go, you might save some money and find a used one on Astromart. I saw an 18" Obsession w/Pegasus optics going for $3500 recently.

Help purchasing a new scope

Posted By Mark Bungart

David,

I too moved from an 8"SCT to a larger Dob, in fact a 15" Obsession.
The difference in images has been remarkable. M13 is simply breathtaking. Obsession makes excellent scopes. They also make a 12.5" model. Check out Astromart since there have been some good deals lately for Dobs. Starmaster, StarSplitter, etc all make quality products.

Good Luck!

Dobs Dobs Dobs!

Posted By Mark Bungart

Well, if you want a good price on a decent dob in that range, I would be patient and keep an eye on Astromart. Ive seen good prices on 14.5 SM, 15" Obsessions, etc that would suit you just fine.

In all honesty, it seems that you should research a bit more, join the SM, Obsession, Discovery and Big Dob Yahoo Groups and read the past messages. There's a wealth of info in those groups.

Which finder?

Posted By Mark Bungart

Floyd,

I tried various RACI finders recently and settled on a straight thru Takahashi 7x50 that I bought here on AM. I found it awkward using a RA finder on my 15" Obsession.
I kept my Telrad on it as well, at least for now.

About to Buy a Large (20

Posted By Mark Bungart

Micheal,

I agree. There is plenty of room for improvements or advances for the truss dob. One thing I've realized is that one person's necessity is another person's extravagance.

What improvements would you like to see?

I would like to see the weight go down, better electical packages, less costly GOTO. Maybe we're begining to see the turn away from wood as the structure material.

I also agree with Doug that your scopes are quite nice looking.
