Mak Newts and Astrophotography ???

Hi,

so I've read only positive remarks about the visual
excellence of Mak Newts, but I'm curious if anybody
has had any luck using their Mak Newts for astrophotos?
I read a review at scopereviews(?) that indicated photography
was a problem since you couldn't quite get the images into
focus or one was at the limit of the focusing range?

Also, I noticed in the accessory list under Orion's
6" Argonaut Mak Newt that a "focal reducer" was available.
Anybody know anything about this device?

Removing OTA from Fork Mount ???

Hi

I have an older 8" SCT (Lx2) on a fork mount,
and I was thinking of removing the OTA
for possible use on a GEM (maybe GM-8 or EQ-6).
Can anyone refer a site or give some detailed
directions on how to remove the OTA?

I have a 8" Meade SCT.
Is it hard to remove a Schmidt-Cass
from the fork mount?Does anybody know of any online guides
or tips showing how to do this?

Better instrucment for film astrophotos?

Hi

well, I'm considering a second scope just for film astrophotos. I finally picked up a good mount (EQ-6),
and I am considering the following scopes:
7" Maksutov-Cass, 8" (9.25" also) Celestron SCT, 7"
Maksutov-Newtonian (hmm), and a 10" Meade SCT.

My main targets are galaxies, globulars, and planetary
nebs... While I understand the rather obvious
observation that "aperature wins", I wonder if
there is an argument for superior clarity and contrast
in the Mak-Cass and Mak-Newt scopes. Also,
the 9.25" Celestron seems to have a good reputation
but 'better than average' optics.

I'd love to hear any informed opinions, especially if
you've imaged using those scopes. Also, I'm planning
to get an autoguider...a cheap one to be used on a
guide scope.

FR 237 focal reducer on other scopes?

Hi

I was wondering if anyone knows if the the SBIG FR 237 focal reducer can be used on non SCT scopes? I was thinking
of a ST 237 camera + FR 237 on a schmidt newtonian.

Would there be serious vignetting? spherical abberation?

Triplet or Doublet at decent price ?

Hi,

does anyone know of anyone (or shop) who can produce
a 90 mm f/10 doublet or possibly triplet lens
assembly?

I don't want to spend TMB prices ($2500+)...but if
it's a good custom job, I might consider it.

Color and Film Question

In May, I took a wide-field shot of the Dumbell, and
though I didn't get much detail, it was pronouncedly
GREEN. I was shooting Fuji Superia 800. I just shot it
again with Kodak Elitechrome 400, and it was mostly
red (like in many pics I've seen). Is this just a difference
in color sensitivity between films?
Or is the F/stop and exposure time making
a significant difference as well ???

Any Got the Draco Dwarf? Challenge?

Hi

I was looking at Draco on HNSKY (a digital sky map),
and it listed a fairly large galaxy in Draco,
UGC10822. It seemed to be as large as M101!
As I checked google for pics, I couldn't find any
really distinctive pics...only sky surveys that
didn't seem to show much of anything but stars,
with only the vaguest, subtlest hint of "something"
in the pic.

Has anybody tried imaging UGC10822? (aka Draco Dwarf)

Would anybody be willing to try? What's striking about
it is its size: 33.5'x9.9' By comparison, M81 is 21'x10'.
Though at 11.9 mag, it looks hard to spot visually.

RA: 17:20:12.00
DEC: 57:55:0.00

If anybody's got a pic, I'd love to see it. I'm gonna
give it a go on the next new moon.

80 mm objective in 90 mm tube ???

I was thinking of purchasing a 80 mm achromat lens
assembly to put in a 90 mm tube. Does anybody
have any suggestions as far as how to properly
compensate for the difference in diameters?

Would a wood ring (oak?) be a bad choice?
