tools for checking vigneting on refractors

Posted By Markus Ludes

you asked for it, I used Google 5 minutes to find what helps anybody of you , here we go

such instructions are so easy geometrie , that usual no teaching is needet.

you have a lens diameter and you have at a specific distance a focal point. Make a straight line by your eye or whatever from lens edge to focualpoint. If something is in the way , like knife edge baffle or drawtube, then you have a stopped down aperture.

Now if you want a imaging scope and many manufactors claim here scopes are imaging scope, then you want a 100% unvigneted FOV at that focal point of a specific image cricle diameter. Lets say 35 mm image cricle.

Now the straight line from lens cell edge to image cricle edge shall not be iinterupted by anything like focuser drawtube or knife edge baffle.

Its so easy, that I do not even understand that such a question can come up , its ssimplest school geeometrie.

here is a sheme drawing, if that would be used by the chinese makers we would have no stopped down refractor telescopes

here a very nice simple webside , read and check your scope that way

I hope these are some good news:

We have many customers on our waiting list with backorders since last year. All those get here backordered eyepieces.

The last run which should be delivered now end of this month was fully rejected due coating maschine problems.

Our eyepiece maker , Berliner Glas in Germany has now ordered complete new glas from Schott/Mainz in Germany to start the next run under much stronger controle against possible damages.

There promisse is delivery early June 2007.

The Quantitys of the last Contract for 10 mm, 12mm, 14mm and 16 mm has been completed booked out by waiting customers.

But we are ready to make them again in that new production run

The prices are firm as following:

- 4 mm, 5mm, 6mm, 7mm, 8mm, 9 mm, 10 mm cost each Euro 145 ( at todays rate about US $ 193 )

- 12 mm, 14mm, 16 mm cost each Euro 205 ( at todays rate about US $ 273 )

- 25 mm TMB/Zeiss aspheric ortho 25 mm 54°, 1.25" cost Euro 190 ( at todays rate about US $ 253 ), in stock

Aries Safix , did play a little more with it.

Posted By Markus Ludes

The company Aries in Ukraine with Valery Deryuzhin is known to some but not all people. Valery is my very old friend and a person with great Ideas in mind. Some revolutionäry Idea's he have had ,he realist and some others not.
2 well known products are the Aries Chromacor , a color corrector for achromats and the Aries Safix , a spherical aberration corrector.

With the Aries Safix, from which I got a some handfull for sale, my little and short review is held tonight.
We at APM build our own Apo Telescopes, but me , Markus , is a fan of any high quality Apo Refractors, no matter who is the manufactor. I like quality ! Due my love to high quality Apo's, I have once and a while all kind of manufactors apo's in my hand , to play with and have fun.

Tonight I compared from 1 manufactor 2 diffrent high quality apos, a f/8 triplet against a F/8 douplet , to see how the work against each other, how the colorcorrection compares under sky, how the starbluring and cool down is doing against each other and and and.....

The F/8 triplet has of course the better colorcorrection and it shows at first view a great Startest. The F/8 douplet has a excellent colorcorrection and a stunning perfect Textbook Startest , as perfect as it can be. If you see the startest of the douplet against the startest of the triplet, then you would agree with me saying well the startest in the triplet looked superb before the douplet arrived, but now compare to the douplet, this triplet startest is only good and not anylonger perfect.

Objects of this late evening in the both scopes has been douple stars, single stars of diffrent color and Saturn.

First I started with the F/8 douplet and pushed the power up tp 410 power = 102 x per inch .
Saturn looked racersharp and bright , visible brighter then later in the triplet modell.
Single stars and douple stars showed almost no halo , but I need to say I did not use Sirius or other bright stars, but first magnitude Stars only.In defocused image this douplet show very little hint of green at one side and purple at other side fressnell rings. Fresnell rings are those rings in the inner part of the defocused starimage. The outer bright rings of this douplet looked at any power perfect identical/symmetrical.
The Aries Safix addet to this douplet apo with perfect optics did not damaged much and did not improved anything , because a perfect optics cannot be made better. But playing with the Safix at this scope is worth a teaching course for anybody who like to learn a bit about optical and startesting. But rotating the Safix you can introduce from mild spherical aberration to horrible big amount of spherical aberration. Its a bit like playing with the Aberrator software.

Then I switched to the triplet , I saw superior colorcorrection, a great looking startest at lower to middle power, but when I went into the high power I could see more and easier in the very little defocused image, how the outside focuse image starts to differ more and more from the inside focuse image.
What jumped immediatly to my eyes, was that I could see the diffraction rings clearly brighter as in the douplet. I switched 2 more times the scopes to be shure and yes I was right. The triplet prooved to have a mild , not much , but visible for scilled eye, spherical aberration. Now I took the Aries Safix and wow , I was able by finding the best rotating position , to see now a same perfect startest as in the douplet , but better colorcorrected in the triplet. The diffraction rings became as faint in the triplet as I saw before in the douplet. So the Safix does his job here very very well.

Now I pointed the triplet to Saturn and thought, hey a nice image, but moments of best seeing looks like they have gone, I did not got the same racersharp image as in the douplet. So I thought, ok, let see what the Safix can do here , at one side he shall correct spherical problems, at the other side, I have with Safix more lenses in front to look through , a bad compromisse ???????

Putting the Safix into the triplet and playing a little with the tuning, I got shocked how much the image improved . Before I thought the seeing does not allow to see the super sharp image , but now with Safix I found the same sharp image in the triplet as with the douplet and I could see clearly better ring splitting and cloudbands on the saturn surface. So Safix does indeet do a clear visible detail improvement on this scope, where I thought before, it has already great optics.

About an half year ago I found also that this Safix did a superb improving on a petzval Apo . So Safix prooves to work well in diffrent kind of scopes.

From now on the Aries Safix will be always with me , a, to play with it and show to friends and customers how diffrent startest can look like, and b, to improve the images formself too.

I will have the Safix end of the month at NEAF show and will demonstrate there a little bit what it can do.

My Congratulation to Valery for this next superb idea.

clear skies

New APM Project starts : 180 mm f/6 ED Apo

Posted By Markus Ludes

Hello Friends,

We starting a new Deep Sky Refrac tor telescope project . Our 180 mm f/6 achromats reached slowy success, but finaly they found owners who love here performance. We have 1 last piece left in stock for sale. Quite a few the optics has been send back to our manufactor due non acceptable optical problems, so we have plenty tubes left and thought about what to do with the stocking tubes without Optics.

So we discussed the new project , a douplet refractor also usefull for planetary observing. To make it not to expensive we checked the cost for a FPL 51 version and our design comes out not to bad , on the free market such optics would be called ED Apo like you see in my headline, but I am realistic and this optics have nothing to do with apo , but they are between achro and apo, so we give him the right name and call it APM Deluxe Semi Apo.

We made tight specs and a good contract with the lens maker , so we have not to worry about quality issue, he pays all returns for bad samples.

To stop upfront any speculations, we make this lenses in China and nowhere else. Only there we can get such good price to give you a good product by hand.

The mechanics from China would be a idea, but the cost with shipping and dutie to us, comes out at a similar level as if we make them here in germany where we have full production controle, so we will do the mechanics here in germany. Only the focuser will be purchased from our great supplier Starlight Instruments in USA.

We want for each country the very best possible service before and after the sales, therefore this new Telescope will go to you through your local dealer and so we add local dealer profit.

The estimated retail price for this 180 mm f/6 Semiapo with CNC Tube, CNC Tuberings, 50 mm finder , Starlight focuser, dovetail rail will be about US $ 7,990. In Trade we promisse you top notch non compromissed quality.

The complete optical tube will have a weight of about 12 kg = 26 lbs and it will have a transporting length of about 920 mm = 36.22 inch.

The Synta EQ6 SynScan Goto Mount will handle this scope for visuel purposes very well

The manufactoring time for the first run will be about 4 month , if it pass our test , we start shipping , if not we delay shipping. But since we work with this optical company since some years and teached them to get better and better we are very optimistic to have from start on good results.

to see what you can expect , see here our spotdiagram of our 180 mm f/6 achromat http://www.apm-telescopes.de/images/artikel/91466_2.jpg and compare it against the spotdiagram of the 180 mm F/6 which you see attached. You read there 178/6, that was the first idea, but now we increased to 180/6

thanks for your interested in our new Deluxe Semi Apo Project

New Product : APM Deluxe Dovetail Rails

Posted By Markus Ludes

How do you like our new >

Cheaper made rails from China makes you always a problem, that screws are in the way and that they easy get scratched.

The rails fitting on any Vixen like mount .

Our new Deluxe rail has at one side a stainless steel plate which protect your rail from many screws from the set screw of the mount. Also the 1/4-20 inch screws holding the tube are not in the way of your mount.

thanks for your feedback on this new rails

Ethos 13 mm 100 ° as magic as Leitz 30 mm 88°

Posted By Markus Ludes

Hello Everybody,

in the past days hundrets of postings could be found everywhere on the internet about the new Ethos 13 mm, as well as info of the coming S+T review and some comments of users of the Ethos on Starpartys.

I am have been lucky enought to look through the Ethos at NEAF , in single mode , but also in binoviewer, 2 pc side by side :-)

The famous Leitz 30 mm 88° which was out before the Nagler 31 came , became famous due its spectacular unlimited spacewalk view , diving into space with no border around, is what pushed people to spend $ 1,500 for the Leitz, even after the $ 600 Nagler came out, people continued to spend $ 1,500 for the used Leitz, due its very special unlimited spacewalk view.

When I got the chance to check out the Ethos 13 at NEAF, in 1 milisecond my brain told me , this is like the Leitz or even better , falling into a unlimited view, hard to describe with words , but something extremly special happened to me , my eyes when I looked first time in ( not through, really in ) the Ethos.

Not only was the view spectacular but also the impression of how perfect the field and edge correction of the Ethos is , better then any other eyepiece I ever used, include Naglers.

There are people out saying, well 18° more is not worth such price diffrence and they doubt they can see the 100° at once, well wait till you got your chance to look through the ethos, only a view into a ethos can change the mind of such people.

But I tell you, a big warning, if you ever look through a Ethos 13 mm, no matter what your pocket and financial siutation say, you will never forget this view and you will not give up collecting safings, until this eyepiece is in your eyepiece case , trust me.

Seeing is believing , shall be the motto of the Ethos.

The Ethos is not a Nagler and it is a big step up , so never compare Ethos prices with Nagler prices.

see attached the Ethos Bino :-)
