Re: Out of gas

Well Judson,

If everyone purchased one of those contraptions, our collective caloric intake would need to rise in order to power the pedals. This in turn would require planting more crops, clearing more land for agriculture, and applying greater quantities of fertilizers and herbicides. Not to mention the negative impact on the multi-billion dollar diet and fitness industry. Hardly a solution at all. No, I think we better just keep drilling the infinite oil supply.

Global Warming film

Hi Darian,

Yes this film has been discussed before. I would only ask that you read through the following two links:

ocean levels

Does anyone have data concerning the ocean levels during the Medeival Warm Period and how they did/didn't change during the Little Ice Age, and how they compare to now? I think it would be interesting to compare, since it can take several hundred yrs for oceans to warm/cool.

Hi Mark,

Estimating changes in sea level associated with the LIA and MWP is not an easy task because of the errors involved with measuring and dating paleo sea levels and the complications of regional tectonism in masking the relatively small signals. Even modelling the drop in sea level during the LIA would be difficult because the peak accumulation of ice volume differed geographically. The evidence for global glacial advance from ~1500-~1900 AD is pretty convincing, but maximum extents were asynchronous due to local and regional factors. I'll have to find the reference, but I remember (from way back) an estimate of ~0.5 m sea level equivalent contribution from all non-polar icefields and glaciers.

This study extracted a Holocene eustatic signal from observations in the Caribbean and noted that sea-levels since ~7 ky BP have been +/- 1 m:

http://www.sciencedirect.com/science?_ob=ArticleURL&_udi=B6VBC-4FCRFCM-1&_user=10&_rdoc=1&_fmt=&_orig=search&_sort=d&view=c&_acct=C000050221&_version=1&_urlVersion=0&_userid=10&md5=7feb9ddeeb371e092cd0cedc83f0eb23

This study from southern France concludes that sea-levels throughout the Holocene have never been higher than present:

Studies in Atlantic Canada conclude that current rates of sea level rise are due, at least in part, to warming of the oceans:

and that the rate of sea-level rise has accelerated in recent years: http://www.nr.gov.nl.ca/mines&en/geosurvey/publications/cr2000/Catto.pdf

Interesting climate article

Interesting story, but for now I remain a little skeptical. The BBC had another skeptics opinion: http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/science/nature/7808171.stm
Regardless, I'm sure there will be a lot more research into finding supporting evidence.

What is it about these people that they hate science so much?

Because science confronts their worldview.
