Jupiter 8-incher first full sketch

Posted By Thomas Jane

Great sketch, the blue festoons are cool, they look brown with my Sirius MV-1 filter in my 6" achro. The detail around the grs is very nice nice to see you return to planetary sketching, your work on Mars was outstanding.BTW your template is wrong Jupiter should look like a flattened beachball not an egg, just turn it 90 degrees and then sketch.

Jupiter Sketch May 5, 2044

Great sketch Sol,I also noticed the bays in the neb and you seem to have captured the white storm in the seb following the grs, each one of your sketches seems to bring out more and more detail, are you seeing more detail or just getting more detail down on paper that you saw in the past but were unable to sketch?

Uranus question

Posted By Thomas Jane

Sometimes the poles are pointed towards us and sometimes the equatoral regions as Uranus revoles around the sun different parts of the planet are pointed toward the inner solar system, its just like the earth in january the south poles is tilted toward the sun in spring and fall neither is etc, its just that Uranus's tilt is so exaggerated that we only see its poles or midsection as it rolls around in its orbit. BTW all I've ever seen on Uranus is a greenish-blue ball, I really don't see how any amateur could see anything on such a distant planet even Voyager showed very little detail on this big gasbag, i'm just find it hard to believe any small 4" refractor will see anything but a small green disk.

Jupiter 05.16.04

Great sketch Sol, I saw Jupiter at 10:00 CST and saw Callisto emerge from Jupiter's disk, I also saw a transit of the grs, sketch to follow, ironically I nearly always use the aperture mask on my 6" achro as it improves contrast, tonight however Jupiter looked better without it,I can see the grs peaking around the corner on your sketch your detail is just fantastic.
