The Usual Suspects

Posted By Mike Dedon

Had a similar expereince a couple of years ago at my wife's brother's wedding. The reception was at home and being a nice day everyone was outside mingling. Except my 3 year old Basset Hound. My wife came inside to find him on top of the food line without any sign of guilt on his face. I still don't know why I got in trouble over that one.

Newbie

Somebody else can pass along equipment advice, and someone will probably supplement my words here.

Go rent a copy of the movie "Sniper". The closer you can get the less lens you need. I've 2x'ed a 600mm mirror and still feel I should have gotten closer. It's tough.

Status of the Sun

Posted By Mike Dedon

Robert gave you two good ones. I use the LMSAL site mostly, as well as Big Bear Observatory (all linkable from LMSAL). If you can create even a very simple HTML page you can get the code from here to put a solar monitor on your desktop. If you can't let me know and I'll send you a copy of mine.

The page on LMSAL I use is:
http://www.lmsal.com/solarsites_main.html#topofpage

The solar actvity monitor html code is at:

What Barlows for PST?

Posted By Mike Dedon

Gregg, I used a Cemax barlow, unscrewed the lower portion and screwed that into the TouCam adapter. The Cemax isn't the least expensive barlow on the market but I seem to remember some people stating they had similar success with an Orion 2x shorty barlow. Search here or on the Yahoo PST group.

Our Two Rescue Pups

My two Bassets stand and "talk" to each other just like that all the time. Great shot.

barn swallows and lilacs

Posted By Mike Dedon

I love the barn swallows that try to take over my garage every year. You're right, they'll come right up to your face and "fuss" at you for being in the way. I have never been able to catch them in flight but for some reason they like to sit on my metal roof in the middle of summer in the heat of the day. Maybe I can catch a few posers that way. Good shot...

No 'Final Four' Poll?

Posted By Mike Dedon

Just a guess, BUT, most everyone here consider themselves some sort of purveyor of science, some more than others. My experience is that teenagers and barely post age-teenagers are not the kind of science you can rely on.

I think it would be a great post to the Sports or Off-Topic forum. BTW, All of my office pool picks are playing this weekend. Go .... (unnamed southern school)

Dan the Dog

Posted By Mike Dedon

We've been a Basset family for quite a while and Dan definitely looks like he has some of those traits. From what you post I could believe most of it EXCEPT for the ability to sit, stay, etc.. Bassets don't feel they need to do that. Their role in life is to eat, sleep, smell everything in sight AND follow every scent until they think you've got food for them. (watch what you put on the kitchen counters, he will get it, not his fault, he's just got Basset blood)

BUT, wonderful looking dog and thanks for the rescue. Love those ears and those eyes. That's personality,,,

Alligators & Stupid People

Posted By Mike Dedon

I don't want to deviate from your topic too much but I have to relate a similar story.

I was doing a contract in Nairobi, Kenya. There is a game park outside of town where there are fences on three sides but one end is open for the animals to come and go as they please.

My buddy and I were out there one day and came up on a lion with a kill. It was alongside a watering hole and she was guarding it carefully. We stopped on the opposite side and watched for a while, from the car.

Some idiot drove up in a new red BMW, sunroof open and all windows down. His kids were standing on the seat, hanging out of the sunroof and he got out of the car and started walking towards and waving his arms at the lion.

That lion got into a crouch and started inching towards him. I told my buddy we were going to get to see a fresh kill. He thought twice and moved back to the car and left.

I couldn't believe he would do something like that AND allow his kids to be put into that kind of position. After witnessing that first hand, I can believe stupid is rampant around us.
