M46 and NGC2438

Hi Everyone,

I've been clouded out for over 6 weeks, but last night there was a 4 hour window of "clear" but unsteady skies. I decided to shoot something that would be quick. I chose M46 in Puppis.

Even though the transparency was poor and the ski area lights were on I think it turned out pretty well. The planetary nebula NGC2438 stands out nicely.

Best method for planet focusing

What is the best method of focusing for planetary imaging (I have a Toucam Pro II)? I generally image deep-sky and I use my Robofocus with FocusMax. This won't work on the moon or planets so I thought I'd ask you guys what is your preferred method.

M8 central region (high resolution)

Hi Everyone,

I've still been clouded out so I have been processing some of Jim Misti's data taken from Misti Mountain Observatory in Arizona with his 32" RC and STL-11k. This first image is a high resolution FOV of the central region of M8. Numerous turbulent gas clouds are present and the detail is fascinating. My little scope can't even come close to this! Anyway, I thought it looked pretty neat.

M81 through a gap in the clouds

Hi Everyone,

Here is a quick look at M81 through a hole on the clouds. The seeing wasn't very good (FWHM 3.5). The exposure was short due to the weather limitations. I hope to get more data in the near future.

new scope arrived

Well, my experimental astrograph arrived. I placed it on the AP1200 GTO yesterday and I’m now waiting for a clear night in which to test it. I sure hope that it does what I want!! I’m sure that it will be great with CCD chips sizes up to ST-10, but I want to use it with my STL11k – will it fully illuminate the chip? It does on paper; the calculations show great promise. Frankly I’m a bit nervous! Anyway, attached are some images of the scope in its current arrangement. The STL11k is attached to the MASSIVE 3” aperture Clement focuser – I have yet to place the Robofocus on the focuser. The WO Megrez 80 triplet APO is the guidescope; a ST-402E is the guide camera. I’ve never mounted a Newtonian-type scope; the balancing was interesting. I had to make an offset bracket for counter weights near the front of the scope to offset the STL11k and focuser. The cable management was interesting as well.

Fully baffled, including dewshield
31% central obstruction
Coatings specialized for CCD imaging
Custom 3” aperture Clement focuser with ultra fine movement


What do you think? Will it work with the STL11K?

Need EP recs for binoviewer on refractor

I'm getting a Denk II with double power switch. I will be using it on either an AP 155EDF f/7 or AP 105EDF f/6 refractors. I currently have a Panoptic 22mm, Radian 14mm, Radian 8mm and TV plossl 32mm.

Which of these EP should I but a mate for to use on the binoviewer? I'm leaning towards the Panoptic.

Rho Ophiuchus complex

Using the same clear skies that Tyler used to shoot his M101 I focused on the region around Rho Ophiuchus. I shot this region last year with a small refractor, but I wanted to try my AP Traveler and consentrate on the dark dusk lanes between Rho O and Antares.
