If you have not tried the Google Earth application, try it to visit GCSP at least virtually, the level of reality is amazing. The cabins are behind the Lodge. Hmmm, the clearing in the wood in the picture looks tempting..
Where is the camp btw, I got an offer there ?

More requests: can you combine 1. and 3. side by side in one picture making sure that the moon size is the same ? I have troubles due to the way AM shows attachement to see them in this way.
The difference seems to be noticeable, but how it would be with say a ca. 25mm superwide eyepiece, is the 40mm f/l/ overstating the effect ?

Grand Canyon observing sites?

Joe,

I participated on the South Rim last year and North Rim this year. On both locations, the official observing sites are condoned by the Park Service only for the duration of the events.
You can search my recent posts re: GCSP, I have some Google Earth pictures of the observing location attached.
Your best bet would be to call the GCSP organizers and ask for their recommendation for observing outside the GCSP window.
On the South Rim, the "lower observing field" would be desirable if you are allowed to observe there. On the North Rim, you would possibly get the best view on the Cape Royal parking lot but be prepared potentially for some discussion with the ranger that you are not camping but observing/measuring doubles/light pollution etc. I.e. no sleeping bags, stove, etc.
I did not want to spend the night there alone so returned back before full darkness (the road is very winded with lot of deer, you better plan for an all nighter), but will go there next year.
I continued through Utah national parks and would recommend specific site in Arches NP.

you should announce the offer to the waiting lists, I have just came across the announcement here by a chance.
A big question for me - how far does the focusing mechanism allow for compensation of shortsightedness ?
With my ca. -6.5D both eyes, I run out of focusing on most binoculars on the market. Not having any astigmatism, I would prefer to observe w/o glasses.

Very similar to my story, only the seller "suddenly" revealed the ding before the deal was confirmed. I backed out.
The seller has the (same?) eyepiece two days later on sale (cheaper than before) in "excellent condition - no marks or scratches anywhere". I reiterated my interest "if it is in the condition described" but was told that he has a buyer. It took 2 more days for "Sale pending" to appear on his ad...Make your conclusions..
In the recent AM tradition, I am not entitled to rate.
