Trump: "On January 20th, as one of my many first Executive Orders, I will sign all necessary documents to charge Mexico and Canada a 25% Tariff on ALL products coming into the United States..."

So a 25% sales tax on American consumers, actually...

This is going to hurt us here.  Badly.  For no fault on our part.

Sadly, we get what you all voted for.

Or the existing Trade Pact among our three nations and the Auto Pact between the US and Canada will combine to put a stick in his spokes.

So you've got a 9% tax on all goods coming from the US that your gov't collects on US goods. So you are killing yourself and you are making it difficult for YOUR consumers who charge that extra 5% VAT tax that YOU charge even though YOU didn't produce those goods.  Why are YOU charging a VAT tax tariff on US goods entering YOUR country?

Maybe you should point the finger at your gov't first, and then realize that the 25% tariff threat is a negotiating tool that Trump has used before.

It may not end up being anywhere near 25% if he does impose tariffs.  Nobody knows yet.

Perhaps you should complain to your liberal gov't leaders who can't get enough of YOUR money in taxes, and complain to them that your child/man leader is a tax and spend liberal who is hell bent on acting as a totalitarian in YOUR nation.

What do you think of that Idea?
To clarify:  The 5% tax is something we pay on everything at retail here in Canada and is charged without regard to the country of origin or if we bought it here or abroad..  e.g If I buy an 8-inch Celestron from a US retailer the Canadian dollar value of the scope has the 5% added to it.  If I bought the same telescope at a Canadian retailer I would pay the exact same 5% tax on the value of the scope.  It's a sales tax or VAT and has nothing to do with treating certain foreign countries differently than others. An absolute red herring in this discussion.

As for the across the board 4 % duty/tariff on good imported from the US, you have me at a loss - I've never heard of such a thing.  Would you be able to provide me a citation for this?  I poked around on the Canadian Border services website for a few minutes before posting this and couldn't penetrate to any actual data....maybe you can do better.

Regarding the tired old comment in bold:  What country that taxes its citizens doesn't then spend the money?

To be perfectly fair, the 5% tax in Canada is Federal, called the Goods and Services tax.  Each province then adds its own tax (Ontario is 8%) so my total sales tax on pretty much everything is 13 %.  But this isn't a tariff in the sense that Trump is planning to impose.

Perhaps today Richard will post a citation for his claim of a 4% Tarriff imposed by Canada on all incoming American goods.  Extraordinary claims require extraordinary proof.....

California Farms Brace For Deportations

Posted By David Cotterell

Doesn't US law require a hearing before a judge as part of the deportation process and the waiting times for these are already lengthy?  Just looking at your California number, adding 81 000 hearings to the docket or even a quarter of that would be a logistical nightmare.

Now that report comes directly from YOUR gov't.  Did you want to dispute it or even comment on it?
You have not proven at all that there is a blanket 4% tariff on US goods entering Canada which is what I specifically asked for.  To pull a page from your playbook I'm asking you again for direct proof that this 4% Tariff exists at this time.

Yes, there was a tit-for-tat tariff dispute in 2018 for sure. It is well over now as your link states in its opening paragraph.  The vast majority of goods flows among our three nations without protectionism thanks to our Free Trade agreement.

I'm pleased that Trudeau and Trump had a chat on the phone.  Maybe  Trudeau and Sheinbaum can talk Trump into backing down from imposing this huge tax on the American public.  Or did both you and Trump think Canada and Mexico will pay the tariff?

First of all, I don't need your little condescending remarks to me.  smile

Well, since you appear economically illiterate, I'll simply ask, what the hell do you think customs charges are that EVERY trade item entering goes through when it enters your nation?

Are you this ignorant about paying customs charges? They are a tariff in case you are so woefully ignorant of how trade works, which you obviously are.

Do you need any other answers to your questions upon which I can educate you?

(And yes, those ARE my condescending remarks back in your face smartass)  wink
Every trade item that enters Canada from the USA only?  This 4% fee, which you have yet to provide a citation for, in order to be a tariff would have to be only on US goods. If the 4% is on every item from everywhere then it isn't a tariff, is it.

I'm closer to maintaining that it does not exist and that you can't prove it exists. I think you are conflating brokerage fees which are not fixed at 4% either.  They are tiered by product value and are rarely above 2% for large shipments.  (Let's not bring UPS into this who once charged me a brokerage fee of $80 on a US product that cost $60.)

I went to a site which allows you to estimate the duty and taxes I would have to pay for importing.  I imagined furniture made in the USA or Mexico (the site does not distinguish because FREE TRADE).   The site does not list a 'customs fee' at all.  There is a box for 'Duty' which is 0% for my imported sofa.  I would have to pay the sales tax which I would anyway if I bought the same sofa in Toronto.

You can play around with this site all day only to find that there is no blanket 4% duty/fee/charge on goods from the USA into Canada.

Here's the site:  https://www.cbsa-asfc.gc.ca/travel-voyage/dte-acl/est-cal-eng.html

Prove your claim.

Not proven.  Possibilities are that you made this up entirely or you have misread something somewhere along the trail (provide a link and we'll see...) or you are mentioning something from the historical record that is no longer in effect.

There is no 4% blanket duty, tariff, fee or whatever you want to call it on goods entering Canada from the USA. Your statement to the contrary is not proof.  There is a Free trade agreement between our two nations.  Free.

In post 5 you said, "Your gov't right now charges a 4% tariff on ALL US goods going into Canada."  You made the effort to write 'all goods' in caps.

You, by your own postings and by postings from others here, have been proven wrong.

We're done here.  somebody get the lights.
