Marriage is a religious institution and has religous underpinnings in almost all societies that practice it. Certainly in our society.
The goverment has no business supporting a religious act, ceremony, or institution. It breaches the establishment of religion clause a lot more than displaying the 10 commandments.
Marriage, for secular purposes, could and should be considered a legal partnership contract with obligations on both sides. Call it a Domestic Partnership Agreement or something like that.
If religions, churches or individuals want to glorify the DPA in a cermony of some sort - fine. But that should have no relationship to the contract. It would be window dressing to make people feel good inside.
Love, sexual relations and procreation in marriage would be incidental to the religious OR secular/contractual aspects of marriage (unless of course the DPA called for performance of some kind).

Just got back from our local high school Holiday Concert. Of course they didn't play or sing ONE single holiday song -Christmas or otherwise. But something else happened there.
One of the songs the orchestra played was written at a private miltary academy. It was explained that the nature of the work was to emphasize that war is about our soldiers being willing to put their lives on the line on our behalf.
As part of the piece, a recent graduate of the high school (and orchestra) came on stage to read a few verses about love of country and fellow man, etc.
When he was introduced, and came out on the stage in a private's dress uniform, everyone rose to their feet and applauded - for a long time. He, and a lot of us in the audience, were moved to tears by this show of appreciation.
Whether or not you agree with this country's military excursions overseas, this was a wonderful example of what I think "supporting our troops" means. A much different response than would have been expected when I was in high school during VN.
(By the way, the audience was a pretty typical American group. We have a Republican First Selectman, a Democrat Rep in Congress and 2 Democrat Senators)
