Northern Cygnus

This is a sad tale of having 11 shots totaling 50 minutes and when I put the card into the reader nothing showed up. I ran a data recovery program and salvaged 4 out of the original 11. So here is a thin version (about 20 minutes) of the Northern Cygnus region. Taken with a Canon XTi and a 50mm olympus (film) Zuiko lens set @ f/4.

My first image shooting RAWS

I finally got to the point that shooting in jpeg mode was limiting me as to what I wanted to capture. As I shot longer nothing was being gained so I took the plunge and shot RAWS. I saved them as tiffs and then stacked them in deepsky stacker and finished them off in PS7. I took some darks but the final image looked better with just the lights. This is 40 minutes worth (8 x 5min) with a modified Canon XTi @800asa and a 135mm f/4 lens...no darks...no flats.

Here is my version of the Cocoon nebula. This is 26 minutes worth shot in JPEG mode and stacked in DSS. I used a C-11 @ f/5 at 800asa with my modded Canon XTi. I used a st4 to guide.

It cleared out and got cold last night so I sat outside and froze while my st4 did all the work. I waited (snoozed) until the Moon set and then set up to shoot. Here is about 90 minutes worth of data (19 subs) with a Canon XTi set at 800asa and an Olympus 300mm film lens set @ f/8. That lens shows a lot of color even at f/8. Assembled in Deepsky Stacker and processed in PS7.

the olympus varimag finder fits the Canon 400D viewfinder? It may fit other models also. It isn't a perfect fit but it will work. I haven't seen this mentioned before here so sorry if I am rediscovering the wheel.

Hi, Here is 2 hours worth of data taken with a FS102 f/6. I used a modified Canon 400XTi @ 800asa. It was assembled in deepsky stacker and processed in PS7.

Here is 1.5 hours that frankly didn't turn out as well as I had hoped. I thought I would have gotten a lot more data. Maybe more time will help...I don't know. 1.5 hours with a modified Canon XTi thorugh a FS102 @ f/6 @ 800asa. Assembled in Deepsky Stacker and processed in PS7.

Califorina Nebula Region

I was hoping to get the dark nebula that runs wild in this area while Orion rose high enough to get some deep wide field data. Well I switched to Orion after only 40 minutes and had trouble the rest of the night. I should have stayed put and just kept blasting away. Here is 44 minutes of data with a 70mm - 200mm f/4 zoom lens set at 100mm @ f/4.5. Canon XTi set at 800asa.

I got out this morning as the Moon set and caught M45 as it passed overhead. This about 50 minutes worth of data that I captured with a modified Canon XTi and a Canon 70mm - 200mm f/4 zoom set at 135mm @ f/4.5. I noticed that the background is a tad milky and realised I caught the faint dust/nebula cloud that is present in this region. The bright blue nebula that is around M45 is a small portion of this cloud that reflects light from the stars in this cluster. Assembled in DSS and processed in PS7.
