America's Number 1 Foe?

Posted By Patrick Keafer

Rod Kaufman said:

Who's America's public enemy number one?
Iran? Nope?
OPEC Countries? Oh, they love us.
China? You're getting warm.
The top honor goes to, as per Mitt Romney, RUSSIA!
That's right, time to reignite the cold war and rebuild America by rebuilding its bomb shelters!
Your top guy at work identifying America's number one foe:

They might be our #1 enemy after Obama sells us out to them. He seems willing to give them the keys to all our missile defense systems, so why not?

Maybe Romney is prescient.

Looking like ObamaCare is going DOWN

Yesterday it was a train wreck, today updated to a "plane crash", by no more credible a source than Clinton Network News itself, that paragon of fairness...

We should be careful interpreting the result of the case based on the questioning but it all comes down to the commerce clause IMO. If a justice believes the federal government can regulate and tax commerce even if it isn't occurring (ie NOT buying health care), then that justice will affirm the constitutionality of the law. How someone gets to that conclusion I don't know. It must be something about the liberal mind but it sure is scary. Why anyone of any political persuasion would want to empower the federal government to regulate or mandate anything for any reason (which this would open the door to) is beyond me. It would be the most sweeping increase in federal power since the days of FDR (and maybe ever).

Conservative Supreme Court Activism

They're surprised? I'm not...

Rod,

They both endorsed Obama. Frankly, most people who claim Obamacare should be "easily upheld" aren't conservatives.

Nice!

Herb

It's a tactic to attempt to motivate his base. The problem is the liberal base is only about 20% of the electorate (if that). Turning out the base strategies just don't work for liberals.

Stand Your Ground Laws

Lee Spain said:

I've been watching the Trayvon Martin case with interest. One side effect seems to be a backlash against stand your ground laws in Florida and Georgia.

I think the laws are flawed in that the police and prosecutors seem to stop investigating once it becomes the living guy's word vs. the dead guy's word. I followed at least one case down in Florida where one possible drug dealer shot another and got off by claiming stand your ground. However, I don't think legitimately defending oneself should result in a person having to hire a lawyer. With all due respect to the lawyers on this board, with a criminal defense for a capital crime running $30K plus having to hire a lawyer is probably the second worst thing that can happen to a middle class person.

Does anybody have any thoughts on Stand Your Ground Laws or How They Can Be Refined/Improved?

I'm ardently pro-gun but I think the law should apply only if the instigator is attacking with a weapon (if it doesn't already). No one should be allowed to shoot someone simply because they were about to get their asz kicked. It also shouldn't apply in the Martin case where that idiot Zimmerman followed the alleged perpetrator. He basically asked for the confrontation.

US Turns Profit From Bailouts

Rod,

The article is wrong. Our investments in GM are not expected to turn a profit for quite some time.

the future of America

I'm not really sure what to make of your comment. I didn't realize Romney selected Palin as VP?

It is pretty clear things are falling apart under Obama though. The economy continues to sputter, government agencies like the GSA and defense department frivolously spend our tax dollars, and now due to poor leadership even once glorious agencies like the Secret Service are becoming an embarrassment. The "company culture" of this administration is horrible and it shows.

Ted Nugent: Hyperbole or Sinister Nut Case

Posted By Patrick Keafer

George Blahun said:

OK, so Ted plays a mean guitar. I think he has the right to say what he wants, but when you say the wacky, violent nonsense he did, he deserves to be questioned by the Secret Service.

While I think Ted is a little wacky, I also think people need to get a life and stop taking things so seriously. It was pretty clear everything he said was in regards to the election in November. This is as bad as people getting upset about the use of the word "targeted" in political commentary after the shooting in Arizona. It is all kind of ridiculous.

In an op-ed for the ages in the Massachusetts Medical Devices Journal this week, Ms. Warren came out against ObamaCare's 2.3% excise tax on medical device manufacturers that kicks in next year. Such a levy has no place in a "fair tax system," she says, and she favors repeal. Ms. Warren even uses that word, repeal, which in the context of government health care might raise an eyebrow or two on Boston Common or whatever park her followers are occupying these days.

When "Congress taxes the sale of a specific product," Ms. Warren explains, "it too often disproportionately impacts the small companies with the narrowest financial margins and the broadest innovative potential." She adds that in the medical devices case such taxation "pushes companies of all sizes to cut back on research and development for life-saving products."

So Ms. Warren is conceding that when the government taxes something we get less of it, though you'd have to be a Harvard faculty member to believe otherwise. But how come she thinks this insight only applies to innovative medical devices and not to, say, investment or even other boring old businesses?

Easy. Because she's running against a popular incumbent Republican and medical device manufacturers have a large presence in Massachusetts that provide many jobs. She wants the votes.

Sick...really sick.

Russ,

I'm not justifying the solicitation of prostitutes but the three who refused the polypraph have already been fired. It seems to me they could be trying to head off a fishing expedition by refusing to take it.
