Sun with sunspots 11 Oct. '08

Posted By Jason Higley

The Sun with some sunspots (615k)

http://setisociety.org/sunMVI_0719reg.png

same shot but 60k

http://setisociety.org/sunMVI_0719reg.jpg

For comparison, here's the NASA SOHO sunspot image from today (77k)

http://setisociety.org/nasasmdi_sunspots_1024.jpg

I used an Orion glass solar filter, a 90mm Meade DS90 refractor, a 20mm EP and a Canon A530 in video mode, started with around 400 frames but Registax tossed out half of them.

Jupiter, GRS & 3 moons Oct. 21, 08

Jupiter, GRS and 3 moons Oct. 21, '08

http://setisociety.org/jupiter-21Oct08-MVI_0902-1pt5regrox.jpg

This time I used a Parks PL filter to knock down Jupiter's brightness because I had do reduce the scale as the seeing was TERRIBLE (it gets down in the muck pretty fast now.)

Still afocal at the Criterion RV-6, a 10 mm EP but NO barlow this time because of the seeing, 300 frames of video via the Canon A530, Registax 4, Roxio Photosuite 5.

Orion const. & M42 too, Jupiter against Milky Way, Earth below

Canon Powershot SX-100-IS point and shoot camera (without the firmware mod) and a Home Depot mechanical timer. Just showing this common consumer/family camera's performance:

Orion constellation with Orion Nebula (a modest 6 x 15 sec subs) expand to full size

Jupiter setting against Milky Way, Earth below (a single 15 sec frame) expand to full size for detail and color

A Messier object in Auriga

Posted By Jason Higley

I was looking around in Auriga this morning and took this shot of a nice open cluster

http://setisociety.org/m37inAuriga-sx100-1fr-15sec.jpg

I think it's probably M37 (based on a description in one of my guides.) Single afocal 15 second exposure ISO 1600 in Canon SX-100 via a 25 mm Meade Super Plossl and a Criterion RV-6.

Serious Sirius, The Dog Star

Posted By Jason Higley

Expand to full size, but get out your sunglasses out first!

http://setisociety.org/serious-sirius.jpg

The Pup is swamped I'm sure, but I wasn't going after it anyway. There were a number of processing things I experimented with to try to handle the noise, but all of them took away from the raw power of Sirius, so I just decided to only crop as much vignetting as possible and left it full-size with all it's defects but preserving the blinding star and it's beautiful color.

Two 15 second exposures stacked, Canon SX100 Powershot point-n-shoot camera at ISO 1600, afocal, 25mm EP, 6" Criterion RV-6.

Cassiopeia, Andromeda, Perseus in Canon P & S digi

Posted By Jason Higley

Keeping in mind that this is from a point-n-shoot camera, here are Cassiopeia and parts of Andromeda and Perseus

http://setisociety.org/Cassiopeia-Canon-sx100-4fr-ado.jpg

One can barely make out double cluster and M31 (if full sized M31 looks like a tiny faint Saturn above Cassiopeia) and some other stuff too.

No scope, Canon SX100-IS camera, 4 frames, ISO 1600 at F/3.5 (I wish I had done it at F 2.8 but at the time I didn't know the camera well-enough to know that I could adjust it and keep the zoom at the same position in Manual mode :^0 ), stacked in Registax 4, post-processed in Adobe PhotoDeluxe, used the Home Depot mechanical timer mount to hold the camera for tracking.

A dense star region (in Cygnus?)-Canon P&S

A dense star region

http://setisociety.org/Cygnusregionmaybe-Canon-SX100-7fr.jpg

I was shooting near Cygnus this particular night, so I'm guessing this might have been from or near Cygnus (but I'm not certain.)

No scope, un-modified Canon SX-100-IS point-n-shoot camera, ISO 1600, 7 x 15 second sub-frames, stacked in Registax, post-processed in Adobe PhotoDeluxe, camera mounted on Home Depot mechanical timer mount for tracking.

No scope, 5 - 15 second sub-frames from the Canon SX100 point-n-shoot camera, ISO 1600, 10x optical zoom.

Saturn and other stuff - Canon A590 P&S camera's f

Posted By Jason Higley

Hi, I got a Canon Powershot A590-IS to replace the A530 I dropped a few weeks ago. Here are some first light images from it (please keep in mind it's a family point-n-shoot camera afocal through my 30 year old 6" newtonian)

Saturn November 26th A.M., those rings are getting thin!
http://setisociety.org/SaturnMVI_1196reg1roxi.jpg

Here's M42 Orion Nebula
http://setisociety.org/M42-Orion-Nebula-5fr-ado-3rd.jpg

M1 Crab Nebula
http://setisociety.org/m1-3fr-reg-ado-exp.jpg

M42 was five 15 second frames stacked, and the Saturn image is around 280 frames from video, stacked. M1 was 3 15 second frames stacked (I leaned very heavily on that M1 image in the processing to eek something out of it, heck it's an un-modified family camera!)

Criterion RV-6, 20mm EP for M42 and M1, and for Saturn 10mm EP with 2x Celestron Ultima barlow and 4X camera optical zoom.

Jupiter-Venus-Moon Conjunction from Central FL

Posted By Jason Higley

Moon, Venus and Jupiter Dec. 1

http://setisociety.org/Moon-Venus-Jupiter-Conjuction-0131.jpg

Here's a purposely overexposed one with an interloper

http://setisociety.org/Moon-Venus-Jupiter-Conjuction-plane.jpg

and here's one with a scope in the scene.

http://setisociety.org/Moon-Venus-Jupiter-Conjuction-scope.jpg

All with the Canon SX100 (obviously no scope used for imaging.) I tried a few scopes to try to get the FOV wide enough, yet big enough to resolve phase on Venus, even shot video, and eventually I was able to do it visually with my tiniest toy 50 mm scope with a 28mm EP, but when I loaded the camera on it, that poor kid's toy focuser just slid right out (I'll have to find a way to gum up the works; I need some of that Chinese scope lube/glue :^)
