I think that your M101 looks good. I know what you mean about autoguiding....sometimes I feel as if there is some sinister "autoguide god" who curses me one night, then blesses me another. Someday it will all come together, probably when I finally get a decent mount. :S

Great job on this subject, IMHO.

Having just recently been getting back into astronomy after moving to WA state from AZ, I definately notice this higher latitude. means ever shorter spring and summer nights which don't allow for much time any given evening, especially for those of us with portable setups.

One of these days, we'll all have the primo equipment, and hour and hours of exposure time on that equipment..........

I like the detail, but perhaps my monitor is screwed up; the left half of the galaxy is showing up red, the other half looks normal.

Also, I see you are using GIMP; I too used GIMP for some post-processing until someone pointed out that it only has 8-bit color depth, meaning that I was loosing alot of my histogram resolution (range?).

I found Stellar Magic Pro to be a good 16-bit alternative priced attractively (~$30-$50 US) for those of us on a tighter budget.

Great shot, and I had fun comparing your film shot (I saw the 3x50 minute one on your website) with this one....they both are very, very good in my opinion.

Is it my imagination, but are the reds more pronounced in the film version?

Nice one for a quick "snapshot"....I thought about imaging this guy the other day, but my trial shot looked weird, like faint skyglow (pollution), and I went to something brighter. Turns out I was faintly seeing the "Gulf coast", but how was I to know? LOL
