SAC7w installation problems

Posted By Sam Greenlaw

Turns out that this SAC7w uses a CCD camera that was discontinued by Philips. SAC Imaging (Bob White) offered replacement NQA today.

There's no way we show of to get the drivers and USB software for this one.

This SAC7w was sold by a dealer as a "SAC7" not a special step-child "SAC7w."

It's going in the mail today. I'd guess that Bob can replace the CCD camera easy enough. Also, there's no way he'd have known that Philips would pull support on the ToUcam CCD's.

Good customer service !!

Your first scope ever?

Posted By Sam Greenlaw

My Dad's binoculars and a pretty good 20x nautical.

Finding things is great for a kid. Star jumping. Learning to read a map with no roads. Excuse to stay up late !!

More recently got back in fixing up an 8" Meade on a GEM. Everything was busted... so it was a lot of fun.

Good (for the money) general use 7x35 binocs?

Posted By Sam Greenlaw

7x50's cost about the same amount for quality. And the FOV is much better.

I went for the Orion 9x63's. Even on sale they were a good bit more. Around $120 if I remember.

These are now $189. Too bad. This is a 5-degree FOV. Excellent optics.

The Orion 8x40 wide angle Outsider model is a very light good quality bino. 7-degree with good quality all the way out. $65.

There are several reviews are Cloudy Nights dot com, too. One's mine, but it's not for anything you're likely to find.

Triangles for mirror cell, help

Posted By Sam Greenlaw

The diagram assumes that you are bulding flat triangles. That is NOT the most stable approach.

Far more stable figures are produced by building with folded sides. Cut your forms with an extra 1/2" or so around the outside of the diagrammed cut-outs. Then cut the extra at the ends and fold the 1/2" down to 90-degrees.

The stability goes up by more than an order of magnitude.

All you have to do is get the holes the right distances from each other. A ruler, a compass, aircraft snips, a punch, and a drill are all you need. A small vise eases bending the edges.

BTW: PLOP downloads free. You can build a 27-point with 14-guage sheet and never look back.

There's easy ways to do the pivots, too..... ;^)
