Your daughter is absolutely correct! They are bird thumbs. They're actually called alulas and extend or retract and act like airplane slats for slow speed flying to prevent stalls.

I'm not sure what your budget is but PocketWizard is worth a look. Also look at Dot Line Wireless RF Remote. It's much cheaper but I'm not sure they will work on the D70.

The bug itself was not that big but when you include the dreadlock (buglocks ) it was about six inches long. This is definitely one of the weirdest bug I have ever seen.
We found these in the Maya Mountains of western Belize last year. The locals called them "chicken bugs" and I have not had the time to find more information. Someone told me they are related to aphids. Maybe aphids on steroids!
