Pole length

Posted By Evan Reed

Vince,
It sounds like you've already gotten some good suggestions, but this may also help. I'm putting together a 10" truss, and used a couple of different methods to get the length nailed on stars. Here are a couple of pictures. Hope this helps!

Heat Shrink - Stove

Posted By Evan Reed

Bill,
I'm on the final stretch of completeing my own truss pole setup, and I have a couple of questions about the heat-shrink tubing. One, what are the advantages of using heat-shrink tubing vs etching and painting the poles? I can see how it would not scratch off and maybe protect the poles a little better, but is there anything else? Two, where can one obtain long lengths of heat-shrink tubing inexpensivly? Thanks!

KineOptics HC Focusers

Posted By Evan Reed

Thanks everyone. Well from reading reviews, looking online, and asking here, it looks like nobody has had any complaints beyond the restrictions of this type of focuser. I would be strictly using it for visual applications, and I don't plan to use massive eps. Although I read on their website that they have an upgrde kit which allows it to handle heavier loads. I wonder if a simple tapped hole through the 'base' with a nylon screw could be used as a focus lock (not that I plan on doing this). Thanks again!

A dumb question re binocular viewers and refractor

Posted By Evan Reed

It seems like if you were going to go through the trouble of making a system with two objectives, you might as well take advantage of it already in essence being a bino-viewer, much like Borg does (as you mention), and JMI with their bino reflectors.

Most important technological advancement of the last century

Posted By Evan Reed

As a physicist in training, I am inclined to mention the unification of magnetism and electricity, and the realization towards the end of the 1800s and in the early 1900s that light is a small part of the electromagnetic spectrum. I figure if decoding DNA can be considered a technological advancement, then so can this...Just my $.02

AstroMart should...

I second that, and although I feel a bit hypocritical, I completely agree. However, I have found that it is in many people's nature to not pay for things if they dont have to. This is why I feel that if AMart is not staying afloat on its own, we (you, Herb) have to make it stay afloat if you want it to survive. This would mean a manditory charge of some sort, or obtaining funding from an outside source (don't ask me where).

I believe that......

I agree with everyone here. Because I believe in evolution and the Big Bang does not mean that I don't believe in God and His creation of everything. I've had this chat with many people (one who was convinced that since I studied and believed science I was automaticly either an atheist or a liar and going straight to hell). I also look at people smarted than me; Einstein, Hawking, many many scientists believe(d) in evolution and a Big Bang and still believe(d) in God. I figure I might be wrong, but that probably aren't!

I believe that......

George,
That is an interesting theory, although I do not prescribe to it. I indeed have a deep awe and respect for the universe and not only its grandure, but its beauty and simplicity as well. I do not assume to know what some of the great scientific minds of the past and present believe, nor do I base my beliefs on what someone else believes (that sort of defeats the scientific process of gathering knowledge). I mentioned the beliefs of other scientific minds simply because I am aware that they are smarter than I am. If their purpose for claiming a belief in God had an underlying motive, then I would not be able to prove or disprove that. I do know however what I have learned and seen for my own eyes. I find that the more I study science and physics, the fewer coincodinces I find. Simply looking at electromagnetic theory and gravitational theory alone (let alone quantum and the less classical approach to physics) leads me to believe that something had planned the laws that govern the universe - they were not simply thrown together at random!
