cg-5, sirius or lxd 75

Posted By victor truglio

I owned 2 newer style celestron cg5 mounts with the 2" dia legs.
I now have a Skywatcher heq5 pro which is the same as the Orion sirius.
The heq5 is much better then the cg5.
No comparison. I had a c9.25 with the cg5 and the mount just could not handle the weight.
With the heq5pro, its no problem
The cg5 maxs out at about 16-17lbs, the 30lb rating is crazy.
The Sirius and heq5 pro are slightly smaller versions of the Atlas.
But If I needed a mount for 30lbs, I would go with the Atlas.

Astro Tech 6" Mak

Posted By victor truglio

I purchase the first one Highpoint Scientific received.
Excellent star-test and very refractor like.
Smooth focuser with alomst zero image shift.
Not threaded for standard sct 2" accessories.
I also have owned an Intes m715.
Not quite as good but pretty close.
I ended up returning it, not becasue it was a bad scope, but 6" aperture and the long cool down are not for me. I prefer a wider field.
I have a friend who has one as well, he loves it and says it eats the Orion's for breakfast.
They are coming out with an 8" soon.

what about astro-tech titan II eyepieces

Posted By victor truglio

I have the 40mm Titan II. Ita a nice eyepiece.
Its in the ballpark of the Meade 5000sw, or the Vixen lxw, which I have also used.

Suggestions on New Dob

Posted By victor truglio

Mike if your keeping the 8" starhopper I would get a 12. If you are selling the 8" I would get the 10"
I have had a few of both 10's and 12's truss and solid tube.
I really dont think the truss is needed unless for space, 12" and under.
I would seach for a 10 or 12 Discovery.
If not I would take an Orion over the other gso or synta types.

Orion 12 inch XTi alignment

Posted By victor truglio

Crazy question, are you centering with the finder or the scope itself?
I have had (2) xti's, both worked great.
Sounds like an encoder issue thou.
Make sure the cables are not reversed.

Orion XX12i First Light Report

Pete, Just as important as the mirror cooling is the collimation.
Being the scope is an f5, its real important.
You will need more then the collimation plastic cap the scope comes with.

Mirror on Orion XT10i 10" dob f/4.7

Posted By victor truglio

That all depends on the size of your wallet. I have had a few Orion dobs and they are great for the money.
I still have an Orion xt8 that I have done some work to. Flocking the tube, slightly smaller secondary, extending the primary so the focal point is closer to the secondary all helped without spending alot of money and I still have the stock primary mirror. I get better contrast and its much sharper for planetary views.
I also picked up a used 12.5 Discovery and the views are amazing.
My point, I guess, is there is alot in between a stock Orion dob and taking the pludge for an Obsession or real premium mirror.
But if money is no object.............

Pinching in your refractor

Posted By victor truglio

iTZ, you still dealing with this problem? Wow
You were taling about this 2 yeara ago.
I live in the same city you do and have owned, easy 15 refractors and have never had that problem.
If Orion wont take care of it then send the scope to someone who builds and knows refractors to look it over.

Big Cat on a CG-5?

Posted By victor truglio

My experience is the c8 is the biggest. I have tried a c9.25 on a newer cg5 with the 2" legs, NG, no good.
And that was for visual, so forget photos.
You need to move into Atlas territory.
I also tried a GM8 with a c9.25, that was passable.
