What are the factors that lead to limiting contrast of a refractor?

Are the lenses and the EP the major factors?

Are the tube, baffling, and internal reflections the problem?

80mm triplett or 100mm doublet?

The assumption is that you already have a good tripod that can hold any size binocular.

A 20X80MM triplett will give great performance for under $200.

There are many 20x 22x 25x and even a 30x 100MM doublet binoculars for sale for $500 and under. A Celestron Skymaster 25x100 may be bought today for under $225.

There are Oberwerks, Garretts, Zhumels, and other private labled chinese binoculars that fall into the doublet category.

In your opinion and experience, is the sharper image 20x80 triplet a better view than having the higher mag and larger aperture of a 100mm doublet?

How much do you have to spend in order to get a 'decent' 100MM bino?

Which model do you have and would you buy it again if you lost it and you received insurance money for it or would you buy something else?

Give me a brake (idea)

A quick garage test. After my post, I went into my garage and looked around for a 'brake'. I found a plastic pill bottle. The smaller threaded diameter fits over the pipe and the main diamter fits over the fitting. I slit the threaded part and I cut the bottom out of the bottle. I had one hose clamp which I used to tighten the section over the pipe. Although I had to torque that baby pretty hard, I could lock the pipe from rotating.


I used a nutdriver screwdriver. A knob or a lever would work too.

So there we have it, a cheap, compact, effective. telescope pipe mount brake.

collimate reflector by eye ?????

I have the same scope and I have been experimenting with it. I can take out the secondary and the focuser and after I replace them, I can collimate the scope in about a minute with no instruments.

Once you do it, it becomes very simple.

BTW How do you like yours?

I am planning to make a bi-Newt out of a pair of these.

I will probably end up with a 2x barlow before the secondary to extend the fp.


Collimate. It is fun.
