Aperture Fever

Posted By John Miele

I had a 16" dob that just "grew" too big for me to haul around. I was considering downsizing to a Nexstar C11. So one night I made an aperture mask for my 16" to create an 11" out of it and compared lots of DSO's from my backyard. I was surprised at how similar the views were. The biggest difference seemed to be on the globs. There were noticably more stars resolved in the 16". But it was harder to see much difference in galaxies or nebulae. So I went ahead and bought the C11. I made the right move. I enjoy the new scope immensely. So for me, it was the right way to go.

Saturn with C11

Posted By John Miele

Great shot Ralph!

I'm using the same setup as you. A c11, a 2.5 powermate, and an antique toucam pro 740 grin . I have yet to try it Saturn, but plan to do so soon. I use K3CCDtools to control the camera. Are there any particular settings you would recommend for the toucam? Do you use 5 fps or 10fps, or something else? I'm sure I'll "trial and error" my way to something that works, but I always like to see what other imagers are doing. Thanks.

From Tycho to the southern limb

What a wonderful image. So much high contrast detail is visible...this is wonderful. This is something I would love to print out on high quality paper and hang on the wall!

Sadness & Fear

Is there some reason you think this is a real concern for S&T? I don't know who bought them, but why are you worried there wiold be such a drastic format change? Just curious...

Mike,

Absolutely beautiful! What type of scope and imaging equipment did you use? How do you use 14 align points? Thanks.

How old are you???

Posted By John Miele

Wow! Looks like you started a very poular thread!

I'll be 45 this Monday. Have loved the sky all my life but did not get my first serious scope (built myself a 10" f6 dob) until age 33. Been 'gazin ever since. Have worked in the aerospace industry (as a structural engineer) all my career. But I still have lots to learn about everything!

Celestron nexstar 11 GPS or CPC 11

Posted By John Miele

Craig,

Sorry I can't help concerning the CPC having not seen one of those yet. I have a GPS C11 and I can say it is a fantastic scope. Excellent build quality, tracking, and optics. I really enjoy it a lot on planets and DSOs.

Observation reoprts needed , NGC253, NGC55...

Posted By John Miele

Hi Inge,

I observed NGC253 last weekend at the PSSG near Ducktown Tennessee(Lat. 35.03N)using a nexstar C11 with a 35mm Panoptic. The skies were very dark and clear but the galaxy was still rising and had not reached full elevation. I saw a quite large and very elongated glow. It was pretty bright and easy to spot. There were several faint foreground stars popping into view in front of the galaxy. The central region had a definite mottled appearence. The core was rather diffuse. Even though it was still low in the sky, it was one of the best galaxies I observed that night.
