What about Santa???

Now for the real serious problem -- global warming is now within striking distance of endangering one of our favorite figures of childhood folklore. If the polar ice cap is gone in the next 5 to 10 years, what are we gonna tell the kids??? Santa lives in Greenland now? Or maybe he's moved to the South Pole?

Sorry kids, Santa won't be coming around this year because he drowned. Don't worry though, let's all jump in the Hummer and head down to the suburban shopping centre where we satiate our consumer needs by buying loads of cheap Chinese products at the local Wal-Mart!!! Merry Christmas everyone!!

Umm, Daddy? Are we partially to blame for his death?

Of course not dear, it's the sun.

Hansen: Try Oil Chiefs for crimes against humanity

Posted By Jason Cosford

Whether the purposeful and systematic misrepresentation of fact constitutes a crime against humanity...well, leave that to the lawyers. However, those responsible for creating, funding, and driving the denial machine should be held accountable for their lies and distortion of fact. They are willing destroying the environment for profit. Make them pay. With Exxon's record $39G profit last year, they should not be given government subsidies and should have to pay a carbon tax.

Spencer: http://www.realclimate.org/index.php/archives/2008/05/how-to-cook-a-graph-in-three-easy-lessons/

Recall that this is the guy who acknowledged that his satellite temperature calibration was wrong in the journal Science and then continued to use his erroneous data to argue his failed point.

skeptical newspaper article - interesting graphs

Posted By Jason Cosford

We've seen and discussed these before on this forum.

The "global warming has stopped" nonsense has been tossed around by the media for a while. When the temperature curves are placed in their proper context, one can clearly see that 2007 is warmer than the 20th century average. That 1998 was an exceptionally warm year does not mean that one can conclude a cooling trend over the last decade.

Civility on this Forum?

Posted By Jason Cosford

Doug,

Your point is well taken and I can see examples on both sides where civility is lost. To answer your question, I hope that those who still do not accept the evidence would at least present new arguments or observations without resorting to long-discredited reasoning. I think I'll scream if I hear another person declare erroneously that volcanoes emit more CO2 than humans or that global warming stopped in 1998. By pursuing these myths, the skeptics/deniers really do come off like creationists and IDers.

Another point that erodes my own personal level of civility is when peer-reviewed publications are dismissed or ignored and brought down to the same level of credulity as a FOX News columnist or a rant on some blog. Some conservative think tank funded by big oil releases a propaganda newsletter and it is somehow more authoritative than a peer-reviewed publication in a scientific journal? Sorry, I don't think so.

Finally, take the current commotion caused by the APS article by Monckton. The thread posted here began sarcastically about how Monckton must be in the pocket of big oil, or a lier, etc. and that the scientific consensus is shattered. It was an intentionally provocative thread - of course it was going to induce a strong response. Monckton clearly misrepresented APS by stating that its members no longer accept MMGW. APS had to issue a statement to reaffirm that anthropogenic CO2 emissions are warming the planet. Yet somehow Monckton is a voice of reason to the skeptics/deniers? These kinds of threads do nothing but invite incivility.

Regardless of these points this tread is still more civil than the Politics thread!!!

The seeds of both of these were set long before Bush took office. It has been fashionable to blame all economic problems on the President who is in office when they occur.

Thanks Jim, I'm starting to understand. So the unequaled prosperity of the Clinton years were due to the preceding policies of Bush Sr. Clinton then ran the country into the ground and thus the current economic problems are his fault. Now that Bush has set the country straight, the economy will recover when Obama becomes president. I get it! There is a lag and it is phase shifted. Thanks for clearing that up. Here I thought that the problem is that Bush took Clinton's record surplus and created a record deficit through wasteful military contracts (yes, you know what I mean) and tax cuts for the rich.
