Minimum Aperture for Planetary Viewing?

Posted By Danny Vettoretti

I've moved from a TV85 to a TV102 and now to a TEC140. The TEC frequently gives 250X+ , which is the magnification that starts to makes planet detail interesting. I am not an experienced observer but the 160 - 190X that the TV scopes maxed out at in my skies just was not enough power - in my opinion. My neighbour is using an AP 6" f/9. We have done side by side comparison's and I could not justify the significant extra cost (tube and mount), and bulk versus the small increase in resolution over my TEC.

Transit of Io Tonight (8/4)

Posted By Danny Vettoretti

Thanks for the info!

The kids and neighbours had a good view last night even though I am at 46 degrees N. Best viewing occurred as Polaris became visible - well before dark. Best seeing I've had all summer. GRS was very visible along with festoon detail. It was quite a thrill to see Io move past the planet - 1st time I have seen that.

best scope for $1500

If you're willing to consider used, a TV102 will work quite well.

Perfect energy source?

Posted By Danny Vettoretti

Storing the energy is a barrier to solar power as per the article - however cost per watt is the biggest barrier - is it not?

Polar warming caused by humans

Posted By Danny Vettoretti

From the bbc article

"According to one of the researchers involved with the study, Peter Stott, head of climate monitoring and attribution at the Met Office, formally showing that the Antarctic was being influenced by human activities was the key development"

I guess they really researched their piece really well. Especially considering the Antarctic has been gaining in ice surface since they have been measuring it. First time I see cooling attributed to human activity.

Woohoo!!

They're clueless...As expected.

Michael Chrichton (RIP) interview

Posted By Danny Vettoretti

I found the interview (climate change) portion to be respectful and incredibly insightful. The GW portion starts at 22 minutes. I had never seen Mr. Crichton speak previously, and I was quite impressed. He will be missed.
