GW in the News

Posted By Robert Pasken

The extremes in weather, warmer summers and colder winters, support the fact that global warming is occurring. The extremes are necessary condition, but not sufficient condition

Another viewpoint...but who is listening???

Of course you can prove that "scientists are hopping on the Global Warming bandwagon (at least not the GW caused by us god-like humans) in order to maintain or secure their government grants". I can supply a list of climate change scientists who provided significant amounts of time and effort to the IPCC gratis and those who lost their jobs because they contributed the IPCC report. To even suggest something like this shows just how low the deniers are willing to go

Forget global warming: Welcome to the new Ice Age

Posted By Robert Pasken

Gee it's winter and it's cold out imagine that! Oh and since this is a La Nina year and it's a particularly strong one, La Nina's effects are particularly strong. So therefore across the United States you can expect coler and wetter than normal conditions across the Pacific Northwest and dryer and warmer than normal conditions across much of the southern tier. The impacts of La Niña at these latitudes are most clearly seen in wintertime. During a La Niña year, winter temperatures are warmer than normal in the Southeast and colder than normal in the Northwest. By the way that is exactly what is happening. Learn to separate weather from climate. If this year you have a hard winter that doesn't mean that global warming isn't occurring. Further as the amount of global warming increases the differences between winter and summer will increase. That means the winters will be colder and the summers warmer.

Censorship

Global Warming, real or not, and if real, the fault of mankind, or not.
This might be an emotional subject for some, especially when some of us have kids/grandkids that will very likely have to deal with what we leave them after we have become wormfood.
We are all (hopefully) rational adults here, so I see no need to attack each other for our own (rightfully) individual views. There is alot of conflicting info out there on the subject, anecdotal info, and data backed by scientific method. Debating the merits of that info/data is part of the scientific process. Attacking each other serves no porpose but to make each other retreat farther into our respective corners, closing our minds to rational (and healthy) debate. Please keep it clean, and family oriented per the T.O.S.

It's shame you felt you had to remove the rational debate along with the personal attacks. The conflicting information needs to be brought out into the open so that people can understand the scientific process and to learn how to separate out the FUD and politics from the science. You have thrown the baby out with the bathwater

So is it worthwhile?

I'd say no. Most of what can done to improve a ETX you can yourself with the instructions that are posted on the web. Jordan Blessing of Scopetronix's has a good set of instructions at:

http://www.weasner.com/etx/techtips/etxtu.htm

Spending a hour or so with this set of instructions will get your scope tuned as well as sending it off

Meade Pictor 416XT Setup Question

Posted By Robert Pasken

David Kolb said:

I recently purchased a used 416xt camera. I am running Windows 2000 and I am using an Adaptec 1460C PCMCIA card. The camera box says "SCSI Connected" when the laptop (HP Omnibook 6000) boots up. However, I can't get PictorView or MaxIm DL to talk to the camera. I have installed the latest Adaptec ASPI files. I have also tried to setup the camera the in the software setup but it doesn't seem to work. There are no apparent errors when the camera first starts up after plugging it in and before booting the laptop. Any suggestions? Thanks.

All that "SCSI Connected" means is that communications between the SCSI device and the Adaptec controller can be established. Depending on how close the Meade device driver writer followed the SCSI standards, it may just mean that the controller-device connection has a terminator installed. Further it doesn't say anything about the PC end of controller. When you look in your devices control panel does it say that it found the Adaptec controller and that it is functioning correctly? First step I would try is to make sure the PC-PCMCIA link is functioning and that it found the SCSI controller. Normally I would suggest running scsiinfo toprobe the SCSI chain to see if there is an end to end connection, but it isn't available for windows

Global Warming, Gays, and Abortion! Oh my...

Posted By Robert Pasken

Pete Brayton said:

According to Tony Perkins of the Family Research Council, the supporters of the idea of human-caused global warming are just promoting the "homosexual agenda" and abortion.
Perkins: A major component of Global Warming is to reduce population because people are seen as part of the problem. And, of course, population control includes abortion. It also includes same-sex relations because they do not cause offspring.
ABC: In a new book, Tony Perkins even argues that if the storms and droughts predicted by climate scientists do come about, Christians should see them as a sign of the Second Coming.
Scary stuff man! I'm building an ark...

Took a look at the web page and found that it reminded me of the Pharisees, Scribes and Sadducees. Too much hatred for me as a Christian. Seems to me that Matthew 3:7 where John the Baptist collectively calls the Pharisees, Scribes and Sadducees a "brood of vipers" is appropriate for the Family Research Council. A example I found hilarious is they complain about how the democrats are holding up the confirmation of judges nominated by Bush, yet it was perfectly OK for the neocons (please note I am using necons here as the necons are not conservatives) to hold up the confirmation of Clinton's judicial nominations

Need Filter for Planets, Moon, Etc.

Judson Mitchell said:

I have a Burgess 1278 Acromatic refractor and am interested in obtaining a filter to improve planetary and lunar viewing. Baader has the Fringe Killer, Contrast Booster and Semi APO filters. Can someone give me guidance as to which of these or some similar filter I should get?

Last night was the first clear night in a while, not having much time I brought out my 120mm Orion/Synta refractor to look at saturn. I really didn't need any filtering. I did see color, but it was easy to look past and see detail on the ball.

global temperatures have not risen since 1998

Posted By Robert Pasken

Let's try a little science :S

The red line in the included graph is the annual global-mean temperature record, while the blue lines are 8-year trend lines - one for each 8-year period of data in the graph. What it shows is exactly what anyone should expect: the trends over such short periods are variable; sometimes small, sometimes large, sometimes negative - depending on which year you start with.

Now let's look at 1998. The annual mean temperature in 1998 was higher due to a strong El-Nino and the following year's annual mean temperature was cooler due a strong La-Nina in 1999. Thus the deniers start with 1998 to claim warming has stopped as the short-term trend line (like the blue lines in the graph above) have a negative slope. This is deliberate, with malice of forethought, attempt to sow fear, uncertainty and doubt by cherry-picking an exceptional warm year followed by an exceptional cool year. In point of fact what the short-term trends show is the effect of weather on climate.

That global warming is occurring is well documented in the instrument record. You can deny the instrument record by jumping through as many hoops as you care to, but you only end up looking like a fool.
