Honu

My family and I recently enjoyed a week with the Honu of Hawaii. These Green Sea Turtles are quite endangered, but surprisingly common on the West side reefs of the Big Island. Ever low tide at least 5 visited the pools in front of the place we rented. We saw them every day we snorkeled as well. The underwater shots are taken with a Cannon A520 Powershot, in a Cannon underwater case. The terrestrial pictures are taken with a Digital Rebel and Tamron 28-300 mm zoom.

I hope you like these pictures as much as we enjoyed seeing the Honu.

Hawaiian reef fish

Hi again; I had soooooo much fun with a Canon Powershot A520 and waterproof case in Hawaii. The water was clear and the reef spectacular. We snorkled from the shore every day.

Here are a few of my better pictures. (I got about 50-60 quality photos.... I am sparing you the 500 or so (no kidding) which had questionable focus or were great pictures of fish that were "right there just a millisecond ago!" wink )

Hi Scott:

We were staying in Puako, about 45 minutes north of Kona. We rented a small 1950s era house. All of the turtle pictures and most of the other pictures were taken 30 or 40 yards from the waters edge, right in front of the place we rented. It was really cool. We wentout in the morning basically every day.

The following link is from a great web site (shorediving.com) if you like to dive or snorkel with your own gear from the shore. The house we rented actually sort of shows on the aerial photo. It is across the street from the church and about 3 houses up. Scroll all the way down this page for the photo:

We also snorkeled once each at the "Place of Refuge" and Captain Cook Monument, south of Kona. These sites were very nice, but popular. We were basically alone at Puako.

I got the case from B&H Photo. They carry a size/shape to fit virtually every Canon camera made. I also bought an external flash, but it was unnecessary in shallow water on a sunny day. I'm ready to go on a deeper water photo-safari if I ever get scuba certified though!

Elk herd

The local elk herd was below our house this September 21. They group up and bugle all night long during the mating season. These were taken at dawn.

This year the herd included an extraordinary number of bulls, including this relative youngster. He's big but no where near as imposing as the older bulls. He spent his time circling the outside of the herd, trying to sneak in toward the females when the two most dominant bulls were distracted.
