This story has a happy ending!

I did not take this photo, but it is so amazing, I thought you all would appreciate seeing it.

An office-mate's dad found this massive bull elk in trouble on his land in Southern Colorado. He called the department of wildlife.

Two game wardens came and spoke soothingly while they unwound this goliath. The elk stood by calmly throughout. Then he left. Not at a run, but with a stately walk. He must have known (on the verge of both mating and hunting seasons) that he was toast without help.

I photographed these fellows in Rocky Mountain National Park this August. (Canon Digital Rebel, Tamron 28-300 mm lens, fully zoomed, hand held)

I imagine they were not so cordial with each other by about October! wink

This little fellow and about 100 of his brethren were living in a beautiful slate creek bed feeding into Keuka Lake in the Finger Lakes region of New York. I imagine he is hibernating now!

Nursing Elk

This is not a great photograph...too grainy etc. because of distance and low light, but the subject is fascinating. I could not believe how big this still-nursing calf elk has become in a few short months. I guess he is trying to squeeze in a few extra calories before the snow flies. grin

Momma sure looks patient.
