Is Georgia really going to elect this bozo?Posted By Brian McFarland |
However, supporting them with your vote while hoping for positive change only supports the status quo. Losing elections promotes change, which is why I've adopted the slash and burn approach - vote against very R in every election until real change in the party happens. It's really unfortunate that this is the case. I've said it before; I would like nothing better than to have a tough choice between two good parties/candidates. Obviously, both parties need to change for that to happen. Will I see that in my lifetime? i doubt it, but right now the Republican party is just too toxic.Originally Posted by James Brown
I understand you and James' points. As James and you both note implicitly, a large chunk of the Republican coalition longs for leadership like Reagan/Dole. Obviously another large chunk loves the swagger and machismo of Trumpism. "Own the libs, nothing else matters." Who will win out this battle for the soul of the party? The party leadership is malleable. They will ultimately reflect what the people want. This is not new. I like some of the current trends, but Rome was not re-built in a day. Give it a couple years and we will see. This election cycle will be informative. As will '24.
It goes without saying that the left has its own "win at all costs" factions, and it distressed me mightily that so many on the left nowadays try to stifle dissent by any means possible. (See my thread about Berkeley Law) The current left wing affinity for casting differences of opinion in terms of good v. evil keeps me from even considering joining the Democrats, even though I was happy to vote for Biden. I feel strongly that the Democratic elites and the mainstream press created Trump by "othering" the gun and bible toting deplorables in flyover country. The resentment hard-core maga types feel may not be justified, but it is not entirely without basis. I myself am prohibited from discussing the legal nuances of the Dobbs opinion around my wife's advanced degree family because they would be triggered. In their view, the only reason to support the justices' reasoning is an evil and mysogynistic soul. Appreciation of Constitutional law has nothing to do with it.
I think the process of philosophical reversion to the mean is underway in the Democratic Party too. I hope so. Jim
