Just food for thought...

I don't have any info. to dispute this guy's main point Doug, that evangelicals are recruiting well across the globe. But when he includes something as stupid as the part I quoted above - even in jest - I wonder about the legitimacy of his serious conclusions.

There are no Calvinists or Baptists in heaven

...if you are, at some level, heading towards Christ and trust Him more than yourself, then your path will lead you to Heaven...

There are also no Catholics, Jews, Muslims, and the like in heaven as well. Heaven is filled with people who are followers of Jesus Christ.

Russ:

I am glad that your view of Christianity is non-exclusive enough to envision sincere Christians of all stripes in heaven. But your post stops well before a critical point.

Correct me if I'm wrong...but:

It would still seem, according to your interpretation of the Bible that noble, honest, and charitable men who died Muslim, Jew or otherwise non-Christian are still damned. Some of these folks have surely died after leading a "Christ-like" life of selflessness and love for their fellow man, yet according to you they presently burn in hell because they had the misfortune to be born outside of the realm of Christian influence. I am talking about noble "Christ-like" Muslims, Jews, Hindus, Agnostics, Atheists etc. Maybe the non-Christian never heard of Jesus or more likely they invested their heart and soul into honorable worship according to the creed that they were born with.

God is not so petty and arbitrary as to automatically damn "Christ-like" non-Christians who never had a legitimate chance at Christianity or who worshiped according to an alternative creed.

Hell No, Anne Wont Go!

Posted By James Brown

Russ Carroll said:

Jim,

I really don't feel good at all about the discussion of Hell on this forum yesterday, and here is why: a correct or incorrect view of Hell's existence is not a requirement to becoming a Christian. I can now see how unproductive a discussion of its existence is, particularly in a mixed group like this with a very broad range of spiritual beliefs.

This is a close call for me, but I do not see in scripture the need to get this right in terms of being a follower of Christ. What matters is how you personally handle the message of Jesus and how you respond to it.

I would boil His message down to this as it is personally what compelled me to become a follower of Jesus: I am not God, Jesus is, controlling my own life has led me the wrong way, I reject my own ways and accept Christ's ways, I want a new beginning and a real chance to follow Christ. Please forgive my many, many screw-ups that have hurt so many people and help me to not add to this list ever again.

This is how it all started for me. No concept of Heaven or Hell. No analysis of who was or wasn't with God. Just a simple and heartfelt desire to follow after Jesus. At the time, I was not even certain who Jesus was, I only knew that the powerful message of the love that He had for me overcame me and cause a lifetime commitment to Him.

If you have experienced this epiphany and the idea of Anne Frank burning in Hell is an obstacle for you in being obedient to Jesus simple commands, then I say don't believe it. To be a disciple of Christ, one needs to follow His commands: "If you love Me, obey my commandments". This is what the greatest commandment is. He did not say "If you love Me, be really, really smart and have all the answers". In fact, the people He was PISSED at knew and believed the truth intellectually! There actions were completely contrary to loving god (parable of the two sons) and loving others (the parable of the good Samaritan).

For me, the concept of Hell holds only one reality: I don't want anyone to experience it. This motivates me to want to be a better (more obedient) Christian so that my family and friends will see the power of Christ in my own life and desire to follow Him. That's it. I can see that discussing Hell is counterproductive.

Russ

Thanks for the follow up Russ. I do appreciate it. Feel good about it too - I certainly found it to be a useful discussion.

As my final point, I think that It is fair to say that your position is very introspective and personal. You have expressed your thoughts regarding hell in the context of your own Christianity, your own Christian conversion, your own family etc. I think that your post quoted above is very reasonable in this context - the context being a discussion among Christians. The way I might phrase an observation about your collection of posts yesterday is this: Russ is on the path of Christianity. This is the path that God placed before him. This path involves certain obligations and Russ is doing his best to stay on the path.

Here is the punch line from my perspective though; (my whole reason for bringing up Anne Frank which has not much to do with inter-Christian discussion...) In my view, your path is clearly the path for Russ, but not necessarily the path for everyone else.

My problem with the more exclusionary aspects of Doug's Calvinist philosophy or even more liberal but still John 3:16 - centric belief systems is really a problem with organized religion - not a problem with God, Jesus or the Bible. I think that John 3:16 is certainly the path for you, but when Doug says that it is also the one and only path for Anne Frank, Gandhi, or the righteous man who never even heard of Jesus I think that this goes way too far and eviscerates the concept of a just God.

Calvin had no use for a just God. This is reflected in Doug's writing, "some vessels are made to be broken..." I reject that philosophy.

Clyde points out - rather persuasively - that John 3:16 and the Pauline writings are inconsistent with Jesus’ other teachings and his Jewish heritage. I'm OK with that too. John 3:16 and Paul's stuff may actually be later add-ons and nonetheless still define the proper path for you and Doug or me and other Christians. I'm defining Christians as people who are called to the Christian path, whether it is based entirely on the unembellished "authentic" teaching of Christ or not. Even so, to extrapolate this path to Anne Frank as her one and only chance is too unjust to make any sense. If there is a God and if he provides salvation, he can certainly tailor a message/path to each of us. It's not like God is unaware of his audience's circumstances.

You note that the issue of whether or not hell exists is not critical for a Christian. OK. Good point. Most of my writing on this topic is simply an expansion of the (in my view) unrelated thesis that a just God provides a legitimate path for everyone, whether they've heard of Jesus or not. It is our differences in motivation and perspective that cause frustration. I'm talking about the possibility of multiple paths and you are talking about our own path.

Pick and Choose Theology

Jim, what are the hermeneutical principles you use as a guide for your pick and choose theological interpretations of the Bible? Please share...

Doug:

I'll reply simply to note that I don't "pick and choose". That is your conclusion based upon your own perspective that obviously differs from mine. That probably won't make sense to you, but hopefully it will make sense to everyone else who might be reading along.

Why are we here?

...and I don't mean that in the larger scheme of things, but here on these forums discussing spiritual things. I'm going into a 12-week cardio rehab and lifestyle change program and I really hope to use this time to re-connect with God and try and understand what activities I should be doing. This is a good time to step back and look at things like my participation here, which I enjoy for the most part.

One thing this is not is a ministry, which I had hoped it would be when I first entered this forum. I wanted to represent evangelical Christianity here in the hopes of softening some of the hard edges I saw in these forums. For the most part, I would say that I developed some hard edges along the way and didn't soften much of anything, This is no fault of my own or others, it's just human nature.

When you look at the pattern of human interactions that Jesus had with people for lessons learned, they fall into two categories: The first is responses to people that really didn't want His wisdom but asked cynical questions of Him to try and tear Him down. He ignored their actual questions and revealed deeper truths about man and God because He knew their hearts. I would have to say that most, if not all, of the debate here, at least from my perspective, fall into this category in the broadest of definition possible. When Clyde asks me questions, he is not really looking for knowledge as opposed to trying to impart knowledge. There is nothing wrong with that, but the fact is, his questions fall into this first category.

The second interaction that Jesus had with people were from people who genuinely wanted to be touched by the Master and sought Him out. Normally, this was motivated by a great need like having an incurable disease or a dying child. Jesus did not turn them away and met their immediate need; however, this was always accompanied by turning the focus back onto their greatest need, which is spiritual and specific to Jesus Himself as the Messiah. Only once in the entire time I've posted here have I sensed, again in the broadest possible definition, any real inquiry or sincere curiosity as it pertains to my own faith. I do the same thing, so I am not on my high-horse, but I would be deceiving myself if I characterized this forum differently. Interactions that matter, where true spiritual seeds can be planted, can only be arranged by God and happen without notice or coercion and can even go completely unnoticed. Helping meet another's need can be a great starting point for such an encounter.

In looking back to my pagan upbringing, one of the deepest seeds that I thing God put in my heart came from a cartoon. I remember feeling awe when I heard it and really didn't assess it at all. I am so grateful that Charles Shultz put himself out to have Linus explain the true meaning of Christmas to me as a child:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DKk9rv2hUfA

Twenty or so years later, that seed grew to maturity and I became a Christian.

I realized the nature of this forum pretty early on but stayed anyway, in spite of leaving a few times. Why? For one thing, it's an important topic to me and I enjoy mental stimulation. I also like to understand the thinking of others on the topic. But aside from personal interest, I have and continue to get something extremely important here, and that is the training of what is and is not important in my own faith in regards to science. I have to coexist in both worlds, and my thinking has actually significantly changed here over time, not on substance but on essentials. Yo may not believe it, Clyde, but you have taught me many valuable lessons here that will be useful in God's ability to use me to advance His Kingdom if He sees fit to do so, so I thank you. I only wish it would be to your benefit.

When I was a fairly new Christian, I hired someone who was down on their luck and poured myself into him for months in the belief that he would see the light one day. I had to try and somewhat isolate him from his wife as she was an extremely immoral person and would hinder my work. After about 6 months, SHE was the one that became a Christian in spite of my best efforts to quarantine her. My best thinking still gets me into trouble.

Good luck in the Cardio re-hab program, Russ. I'm here (in Politics, Religion, Non-Religion and NHB) because I enjoy the discussion. Often I learn things. Often the banter is fun.

I'd say that this is just the nature of an internet forum. This medium and this crowd (amateur astronomers) is not really the ideal format for a ministry.

Quick poll (Works or Grace)

Posted By James Brown

Doug Matulis said:

Just conducting a quick poll on salvation

Please answer the following question with either works of grace:

In biblical Christianity, is salvation by works or is salvation by grace through faith?

The phrasing of your question is flawed Doug. The only intellectually honest answer is that the Bible says both things. The Bible doesn't necessarily say that both works and grace are necessary together, although that is one way of looking at it. No, in some places the Bible says works alone and in other places the Bible says grace.

I personally think the fuss made over this issue is silly. Do good works, pray for grace and hope for the best. That's about all anyone can do no matter how cock-sure his or her spiritual leaders might be that they have the correct answer.

I cribbed the following quotes many years ago. You've seen it before, more than once. wink

Works:

Matthew 5:48 (part of the Expounding of the Law within the Sermon on the Mount): "Be perfect, therefore, as your heavenly Father is perfect." (compare Imitatio dei)

Matthew 7:21 (part of the Sermon on the Mount): "Not everyone who says to me, 'Lord, Lord,' will enter the kingdom of heaven, but only he who does the will of my Father who is in heaven."

Matthew 7:24-27 (part of the Sermon on the Mount): "Therefore everyone who hears these words of mine and puts them into practice is like a wise man who built his house on the rock. The rain came down, the streams rose, and the winds blew and beat against that house; yet it did not fall, because it had its foundation on the rock. But everyone who hears these words of mine and does not put them into practice is like a foolish man who built his house on sand. The rain came down, the streams rose, and the winds blew and beat against that house, and it fell with a great crash."

Matthew 12:36-37: "I tell you, on the day of judgment you will have to give an account for every careless word you utter; For by your words you will be justified, and by your words you will be condemned."

Matthew 16:27: "For the Son of Man is going to come in his Father's glory with his angels, and then he will reward each person according to what he has done."

Matthew 19:17: ""Why do you ask me about what is good?" Jesus replied. "There is only One who is good. If you want to enter life, obey the commandments.""

Matthew 24:10-20 (part of the Olivet discourse): "Then many will fall away, and they will betray one another and hate one another. And many false prophets will arise and lead many astray. And because of the increase of lawlessness, the love of many will grow cold. But the one who endures to the end will be saved.

Matthew 25:31-46 (part of The Sheep and the Goats): "When the Son of Man comes in his glory, and all the angels with him, he will sit on his throne in heavenly glory. All the nations will be gathered before him, and he will separate the people one from another as a shepherd separates the sheep from the goats. He will put the sheep on his right and the goats on his left. Then the King will say to those on his right, 'Come, you who are blessed by my Father; take your inheritance, the kingdom prepared for you since the creation of the world. For I was hungry and you gave me something to eat, I was thirsty and you gave me something to drink, I was a stranger and you invited me in, I needed clothes and you clothed me, I was sick and you looked after me, I was in prison and you came to visit me.' Then the righteous will answer him, 'Lord, when did we see you hungry and feed you, or thirsty and give you something to drink? When did we see you a stranger and invite you in, or needing clothes and clothe you? When did we see you sick or in prison and go to visit you?' The King will reply, 'I tell you the truth, whatever you did for one of the least of these brothers of mine, you did for me.' Then he will say to those on his left, 'Depart from me, you who are cursed, into the eternal fire prepared for the devil and his angels. For I was hungry and you gave me nothing to eat, I was thirsty and you gave me nothing to drink, I was a stranger and you did not invite me in, I needed clothes and you did not clothe me, I was sick and in prison and you did not look after me.' They also will answer, 'Lord, when did we see you hungry or thirsty or a stranger or needing clothes or sick or in prison, and did not help you?' He will reply, 'I tell you the truth, whatever you did not do for one of the least of these, you did not do for me.' Then they will go away to eternal punishment, but the righteous to eternal life."

Matthew 28:19-20a (part of the Great Commission): "Therefore go and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, and teaching them to obey everything I have commanded you."

Luke 8:21: " But He answered and said to them, "My mother and My brothers are these who hear the word of God and do it."

Luke 10:25-28: "On one occasion an expert in the law stood up to test Jesus. "Teacher," he asked, "what must I do to inherit eternal life?" "What is written in the Law?" he replied. "How do you read it?" He answered: " 'Love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your strength and with all your mind'; and, 'Love your neighbor as yourself.'" "You have answered correctly," Jesus replied. "Do this and you will live.""

John 5:29: "And will come out--those who have done good, to the resurrection of life, and those who have done evil, to the resurrection of condemnation."

Romans 2:6,7; 13: "For he will repay according to each one's deeds. To those who by patiently doing good seek for glory and honor and immortality, he will give eternal life; for it is not those who hear the law who are just in the sight of God; rather, those who observe the law will be justified."

Romans 2:16: "on the day when, according to my gospel, God, through Jesus Christ, will judge the secret thoughts of all."

Galatians 6:7b-9: "A man reaps what he sows. The one who sows to please his sinful nature, from that nature will reap destruction; the one who sows to please the Spirit, from the Spirit will reap eternal life. Let us not become weary in doing good, for at the proper time we will reap a harvest if we do not give up."

1 Corinthians 7: 19 "Circumcision means nothing and uncircumicsion means nothing; what matters is keeping God's commandments"

1 Corinthians 10:12: "Wherefore let him that thinketh he standeth take heed lest he fall."

1 Corinthians 13:2-3: "And if I have prophetic powers, and understand all mysteries and all knowledge, and if I have all faith, so as to remove mountains, but do not have love, I am nothing. If I give away all my possessions, and if I hand over my body so that I may boast, but do not have love, I gain nothing."

1 Corinthians 13:13: "And now faith, hope, and love abide, these three; and the greatest of these is love."

2 Corinthians 5:10: "For we must all appear before the judgement seat of Christ, so that each one may receive recompense, according to what he did in the body, whether good or evil."

Philippians 2: 12b-13 "work out your salvation with fear and trembling, For God is one who, for his good purpose, works in you both to desire and to work."

1 Timothy 4:16 "Attend to yourself and to your teaching; persevere in both tasks, for by doing so you will save both yourself and those who listen to you"

James 1:22: "Do not merely listen to the word, and so deceive yourselves. Do what it says."

James 2 (excerpts): "... What doth it profit, my brethren, though a man say he hath faith, and have not works? can faith save him? ... Thou believest that there is one God; thou doest well: the devils also believe, and tremble. But wilt thou know, O vain man, that faith without works is dead? Was not Abraham our father justified by works, when he had offered Isaac his son upon the altar? Seest thou how faith wrought with his works, and by works was faith made perfect? ... Ye see then how that by works a man is justified,

James 2:24: "You see that a person is justified by works and not by faith alone."

Phillipians 2:12-13: "... work out your salvation with fear and trembling. For God is the one who, for his good purpose, works in you both to desire and to work."

1 Peter 1:17: "Now if you invoke as Father him who judges impartially according to each one's works, conduct yourselves with reverence during the time of your sojourning."

1 John 2:3-7: "We know that we have come to know him if we obey his commands. The man who says, "I know him," but does not do what he commands is a liar, and the truth is not in him. But if anyone obeys his word, God's love is truly made complete in him. This is how we know we are in him: Whoever claims to live in him must walk as Jesus did. Dear friends, I am not writing you a new command but an old one, which you have had since the beginning. This old command is the message you have heard."

Revelation 14:12-13: "Here is a call for the endurance of the saints, those who keep the commandments of God and hold fast to the faith of Jesus. And I heard a voice from heaven saying, ‘Write this: Blessed are the dead who from now on die in the Lord.’ ‘Yes,’ says the Spirit, ‘they will rest from their labours, for their deeds follow them.’

Revelation 20:13: "All the dead were judged according to their deeds."

Matthew 7:22-23: "Many will say to me in that day, 'Lord, Lord, have we not prophesied in thy name? and in thy name have cast out devils? and in thy name done many wonderful works?' And then will I profess unto them, I never knew yougrinepart from me, ye that work iniquity."

Galatians 2:16: "Knowing that a man is not justified by the works of the law, but by the faith of Jesus Christ, even we have believed in Jesus Christ, that we might be justified by the faith of Christ, and not by the works of the law: for by the works of the law shall no flesh be justified."

Galatians 2:21: "I do not frustrate the grace of God: for if righteousness come by the law, then Christ is dead in vain."

Galatians 3:1-3; 9-14; 21-25: "O foolish Galatians, who hath bewitched you, that ye should not obey the truth, before whose eyes Jesus Christ hath been evidently set forth, crucified among you? This only would I learn of you, Receive ye the Spirit by the works of the law, or by hearing of faith? Are you so foolish? having begun in the Spirit, are ye now made perfect by the flesh? ... So then they which be of faith are blessed with faithful Abraham. For as many as are of the works of the law are under the curse: for it is written, Cursed is every one that continueth not in all things which are written in the book of the law to do them. But that no man is justified by the law in the sight of God, it is evident: for, The just shall live by faith. And the law is not of faith: but, The man that doeth them shall live in them. Christ hath redeemed us from the curse of the law, being made a curse for us: for it is written, Cursed is every one that hangeth on a tree. That the blessing of Abraham might come on the Gentiles through Jesus Christ; so that we might receive the promise of the Spirit through faith.... Is the law then against the promises of God? God forbid: for if there had been a law given which could have given life, verily righteousness should have been by the law. But the Scripture harh concluded all under sin, that the promise by faith of Jesus Christ might be given to them that believe. But before faith came, we were kept under the law, shut up unto the faith which should afterwards be revealed. Wherefore the law was our schoolmaster to bring us unto Christ, that we might be justified by faith. But after that faith is come, we are no longer under a schoolmaster."

Ephesians 2:8-10: "For by grace are ye saved through faith; and that not of yourselves: it is the gift of God: Not of works, lest any man should boast. For we are his workmanship, created in Christ Jesus unto good works, which God hath before ordained that we should walk in them."

Guess who

Posted By James Brown

Guess what famous living American recently answered the following questions in the following (IMHO) exceptionally refreshing and very open manner. No fair using Google, unless of course you are stumped and give up. But don't post a Googled-guess please.

Jim

Q. A lot of people point to the Bible for reasons why gay people should not be in the church, or accepted in any way.

A. Homosexuality was well known in the ancient world, well before Christ was born and Jesus never said a word about homosexuality. In all of his teachings about multiple things -– he never said that gay people should be condemned. I personally think it is very fine for gay people to be married in civil ceremonies.

Q. Jesus says I am the way the truth and the life (John 14:6). How can you remain true to an exclusivist faith claim while respecting other faith traditions?

A. Jesus also taught that we should not judge other people (Matthew 7:1), and that it is God who judges people, so I am willing to let God make those judgments, in the ultimate time whenever it might come. I think 'judge not that you be not judged' is the best advice that I will follow. Maybe it is a rationalization, but it creates a lack of tension in my mind about that potential conflict.

There are many verses in the Bible that you could interpret very rigidly and that makes you ultimately into a fundamentalist. When you think you are better than anybody else -- that you are closer to God than other people, and therefore they are inferior to you and subhuman -- that leads to conflict and hatred and dissonance among people when we should be working for peace.

Q. Should we approach the Bible literally, or metaphorically?

A. When we go to the Bible we should keep in mind that the basic principles of the Bible are taught by God, but written down by human beings deprived of modern day knowledge. So there is some fallibility in the writings of the Bible. But the basic principles are applicable to my life and I don't find any conflict among them.
