Trump has a history of falsely claiming that serious but controversial remarks had been sarcasm. For example, he has insisted that his famous 2016 "Russia, if you're listening" request for Russia's help obtaining Hillary Clinton's emails was him being "sarcastic" and making "a joke."

Rod, I was listening when Trump made this statement. It was obvious to anyone but leftist imbeciles that he was being "humorous". It's funny that some people are actually that "stupid", but I guess that leftist cretins infected with TDS are unable to appreciate good humor. To the left, laughing at something like Carson's humor is unacceptable.

There is nothing humorous about publicly asking a foreign country to interfere in our elections. Was Trump also being funny when he said on the White House Lawn that he though the Chinese should investigate the Biden's? I learned a long time ago that there are some things you just don't joke about. You would think that this is a lesson that the POTUS would not need to learn.

Predictably, now the WH is blaming the man who briefed the President about the study regarding the efficacy of disinfectants and UV light in killing the virus. Which is it, Mr. President? Were you sarcastic, or were you improperly briefed? Here is an idea, maybe the President shouldn't ad-lib and riff during a pandemic crisis until after he's processed all the information and is sure about what is factual and what is lethal nonsense. Is that too much to ask?

Covid-19 data and graphs

Jim,

I'm learning to appreciate your eternally positive outlook more. I do have some hope we will see a 3rd quarter rebound, and I am open to being recalled.
We had 50,000 deaths from COVID-19 from April 1 to April 25. However, it looks like we will hit a plateau in early June, and if things continue to improve, certainly level off by early July. If some therapies and treatments do become available, then maybe the demand for air travel and vacations will start to tick back up. We were in the middle of implementing an exciting product that would allow airlines to refund multiple documents with one service call automatically. It will be a game-changer in the industry since this activity is mostly one-of or manual at this time. I would dearly love to be able to finish that product before riding off into the sunset.

No, I'm not afraid, and you miss the point entirely. It's not about who is afraid and who is not. The point is any competent leader would have used that clearly soft-ball question to emphasize their empathy and leadership and understanding. Instead, Trump did what he does best, and completely misunderstood the intent of the question, treated it as hostile when it clearly was not, and in the end made himself look like a foolish uncaring person.

I don't watch them, so I wouldn't know if I do or not. Please don't insult our intelligence. No one can view the press briefing where Trump suggested the doctor's look into injecting disinfectants and strong lights into the body and honestly believe he was sarcastic or funny. He was riffing and ad-libbing and made himself look foolish.

Of course, I don't think I'm going to change any minds. However, it's beyond laughable to expect anyone to believe that Trump was just joking. Anyone who watches the footage for themselves can see that it is not what is happening.

Here is the most generous interpretation I can give regarding what happened.

Trump received a briefing shortly before the presser about a study that looked into the efficacy of disinfectants and UV light concerning killing coronavirus. He clearly did not fully understand what the review was or its conclusions. But Trump always feels the need to demonstrate his "natural" understanding of science, so he started ad-libbing and riffing about looking into using disinfectant and UV light in the human body to destroy the virus. In simple terms, he doesn't understand what he's told, he doesn't know much about medicine, but still, he likes to babble as if he does incoherently.

Whatever ridicule he has received, he fully deserves. You can't sharpie this kind of stupidity into looking smart.

Jim,

They are just one day away from blaming it on Hillary's emails or saying it was a plant of misinformation by the Obama deep-state, or that what Trump meant was that the My Pillow Guy should try using the disinfectant for cleaning. Oh, and by the way, when I said Trump was the stupidest man ever to occupy the office of the POTUS, that was just sarcasm.

We're all just pushing on a rope here.

I have to disagree, Dave, only because there is plenty of hard data that shows without a doubt that things would be worse without social distancing. Polls show that the vast majority of Americans not only realize this but that they also support ongoing efforts. The data and graphs and analysis that Jim has posted here alone should be enough to convince anyone. Still, you will never be able to persuade the hard-core Trump supporters who see all of this only through the lens of it's all a big hoax designed to harm his re-election chances.

Here are reported coronavirus deaths by month over the last three months:

Feb. 28: 0
Mar. 28: 2,043
Apr. 28: 58,356

In one month, we had more deaths from the coronavirus than a whole year of seasonal flu, and that was with extreme non-pharmaceutical interventions like school-closings and stay-at-home orders. This simple fact alone should be enough to convince anyone of the seriousness of COVID-19, but it will not be for people who have to believe otherwise to hold onto their preconceived notions.

Transcript of Trump's word-salad response when asked if he's spoken with families of anyone who has died in the pandemic. If you think this is an isolated one-of case you are absolutely wrong. If you are fine with this response, yet have problems with Biden's stutter, you may have a personal bias.

Q: Mr. President, you’ve spoken about your friend who passed away. I was wondering if you’ve spoken to the families of anyone else who has lost loved ones to COVID-19, if there’s any particular stories that have affected you?

A: Well, I have. I have many people. I know many stories. I’ve spoken to three, maybe, I guess, four families unrelated to me. I did. I lost a very good friend. I also lost three other friends, two of whom I didn’t know as well, but they were friends and people I did business with and probably almost everybody in the room did.

It’s a bad death. It’s a bad thing. It grips onto some people. Now, we found out that young people do extraordinarily well. That’s why I think we can start thinking about schools, but of course we’re ending the school season, so you wouldn’t be back for too long. I noticed where Purdue University, a great school in a great state, wants to open and have students come in. I think that’s correct. Some colleges, I think, I saw Harvard wants to have students come back in the fall. I would hope
that they’d have students.

I think that the whole concept of computer learning is wonderful, but it’s not, telelearning, but it’s not the same thing as a being in a classroom in a great college or a college of any kind. College, university, there’s nothing. You can’t replace that. Hopefully they’re going to be coming back. Young people do very well with this horrible scourge. They do very well.

I am going to see you tomorrow and we’ll have other things to talk about. We have a lot of interesting things. I don’t think we should have a news conference today because this is a news conference. In addition, it’s a celebration of these incredible people that have done such a good job and I think we found a couple of stars in this room today. I won’t tell you who, but there are a couple.

This guy right here is the biggest star in the room. Right? We’ll all agree he’s the … I vote. I vote for you. Great job you’ve done and I really appreciate it. I appreciate you being here. Couldn’t have done better.
