Should the Capital Gains Tax Be Raised?

Posted By Tom Rodstrom

Of course the capital gains tax should be raised. The short term capital gains tax that is. By lowering the short term capital gains tax Bush turned investment into a big gambling ring. Capital gains tax should be graduated, very high for short term investments and quite low for long term investments.

Bush Defends OPEC Against US, Part2

Posted By Tom Rodstrom

Rod Kaufman said:

Last week, Bush defended Saudi Arabia over American interests and this week he's back at it again! The House of Representatives passed a bill with bipartisan support that gives America the authority to go after OPEC for price-fixing via anti-trust legislation but Bush won't stand for it and he will, in effect, veto it! I say let America have its day in court and let the court decide!

Bad idea. Faced with court action, OPEC countries might pull their money out of the US giving the economy yet another hit.

Why is it?

Why is it that this forum is so heated all the time. It seems to me that most are here to just stir up an argument and then push it as far as the moderator will allow. Makes for very poor reading really. :S
One of the worst considers this forum entertainment. At one time he said "It really makes my day when I get their goat." *

*Not an exact quote. He deleted his post after it was used to explain his actions. It is interesting to note that some of the most prolific and/or offensive participants on the right (JB, PK, TB) have no Astromart ratings. I wonder if they even own a telescope.

Thank Goodness!

All of the inflation you are discussing is related to the price of oil. As a result of these increases, I will bet that your family is thinking more about your driving habits and about spending money on items that your family believes are essentials, but that environmentalists know you do not need anyway. Just think about how much pollution you are not putting in the air and the landfills. It will make you feel so much better. :S Since you and your family are typical Americans who will never make the choices environmentalists believe you should, the high oil prices are making them for you. You and your family should be very proud that you are doing your part for the environment. We should never complain about high energy costs since they were requested and predicted by environmentalists who know better how to spend YOUR hard earned cash than you do. If you want something to complain about, Bush and Republicans are always fair game. wink
Jim,

The environmentalists DID NOT cause the oil price increase. If we had conserved, the price of gas would be much cheaper. Instead we bowed to Detroit and rather than producing and marketing fuel efficient vehicles, we subsidized huge gas guzzlers and now we are paying the price. Of course as a military contractor making $1000 a day or more, you don't really have to worry much about prices, do you?

What are the alternatives?

Posted By Tom Rodstrom

I think that we need to fill our energy needs with nuclear plants. They produce energy without contributing to global warming. The electricity they produce is impractical for long range vehicles, but if the storage problem for helium could be solved, fuel cell vehicles could be used and perhaps a process could be found to create a liquid fuel from hydrogen.

I don't think that nuclear waste storage is as big a problem as we see. If we can store it for 500 years minimum and keep access to it there should be new technologies available by then to deal with it for the next 10,000 years.

So are you calling this General a liar?
Do you mean this political appointee who's last job was domestic spying? The one who works for a guy who believes the Constitution is just a piece of paper? The officer who believes the military should spy on American citizens without ever getting a court order?

No, I'm not calling him a liar. I just don't trust his assessment. Besides, he works for the Bush administration. He can't lie, he can only misspeak.

In case you are wondering, I don't have much respect for him because of his involvement with Cheney's National Security Agency.

Jim,

Would your job be easier if it was clear that this was not a war on Islam (or is it a war on Islam)?

IMO a war on a movement like al Qaeda cannot be won by military force alone. We must also fight the ideology behind it.

Have a safe trip on your next deployment.

Any chance she might run a Joe Lieberman-style independent campaign?
Liberman ... Leberman ... ... Oh, that guy. What ever happened to him. I don't see much of him these days. I don't think Hillary will to go the same way.

Obama's statement about 57 states?

Posted By Tom Rodstrom

Darian Rachal said:

I'm sure most of you have seen the video where Obama is talking about having been in all 57 states. Anybody have any idea why he used that number? He said it in such a manner that it seemed deliberate.

Was this a coded message that those "in the know", such as Farrakhan's followers would understand. I seem to recall Farrakhan being fascinated with numbers, on some occasions.

I know it's an odd thing, but a friend mentioned it, and it made me wonder just a bit. :S
It's real clear that he meant to say 47 states with 1 to go excluding Alaska and Hawaii. Unlike Bush, I'm confident that Obama knows how many states there are.

Keep grabbing for straws, guys, November is coming. grin
