Donald J. Trump - 2/24/2020:

The Coronavirus is very much under control in the USA. We are in contact with everyone and all relevant countries. CDC & WHO have been working hard and very smart. Stock Market starting to look very good to me!

I agree, and I'm not trying to suggest that the WHO does not deserve some criticism in some respects. However, the re-writing of history so that Trump has a scapegoat to provide cover for his own mistakes is pretty galling, albeit par for the course in politics.

You would be completely wrong. I never bashed the China travel ban. In fact, by the time we had done it, over 45 countries had already done it. It turns out, though, in hindsight, of course, that the travel ban had little effect. Even after the ban went into place, some 40,000 travelers from China entered the US through other departure points like Hong Kong, Singapore, and Japan.

Additionally, the infection in NY is primarily of European origin, which also came into the country before the European travel ban. Even CDC and HHS and FEMA officials were privately commiserating among themselves in the by now famous Red Dawn emails that the bans would not help, since the virus was already here. So, while I never bashed them in the sense that I said that they should not have occurred, the European ban could undoubtedly have been implemented far better than it was, it looks like they did little good.

We have not!

I did a quick survey, and I could find plenty of reporting in most places other than CNN, such as NYT, Washington Post, MSNBC, etc.

It's legitimate to talk about sexual assault allegations against any candidate for the Presidency, including Donald J. Trump and Biden, and she has the right to be heard. No one should ever be allowed to gloss over or make excuses for their history in this regard.

I'm not quite sure I follow you, Mel, but let me clarify several things. First, yes, I can't stand Trump, and it's doubtful anyone could ever redeem him for me. Second, I am not naive enough to think that Trump is solely responsible for the inadequate response from the Federal Government regarding the Coronavirus. However, Trump is the leader of the executive branch of government, and as such, he wields considerable sway and power. Trump has the most potent bully-pulpit in the world, and his use of that influence affects outcomes significantly. And what does he do with it? Trump lies, and Trump rewrites history and plays the victim. Trump says he both takes no responsibility and has complete authority. In short, he squanders that influence, and instead of using it to unify and inspire, he uses it to degrade people and participate in divisive politics and spread disinformation. Lastly, I believe good people are working behind the scenes at the federal level, and certainly at the state, local, and regional levels that will make good things happen. However, they are succeeding despite Trump, not because of Trump.

Which, of course, proves nothing. Just like I'm not going to respond to everything Richard says, I'm certainly not going to respond to everything you post either. If you like to think that somehow shows that you won, then please feel free to do an end-zone dance, or take a victory lap, or spank your monkey. It makes no difference to me.

This is true from what I can tell.

I do agree we should read widely, but certain sources like FOX, the Daily Caller, Townhall, etc. can safely be thrown on the trash heap right away.

I think I've made it pretty clear I don't blame Trump entirely. He is however a terrible leader, a worse human being, and undoubtedly the stupidest man to ever occupy the office.

I did not. What I said was that its implementation was terrible. It was unannounced and with no regard for coordination. It stranded thousands upon thousands of travelers in our airports who were returning from COVID hotspots shoulder-to-shoulder for hours upon hours why they tried to claim their luggage and navigate customs. Seriously Greg, the only person on the planet who misrepresents what people say worse than Trump, is Davis.

I never supported that. However, the President does set the tone.
