It remains to be seen if he will, or actually even can, cut the funding. Or maybe this is a case of that total authority I hear so much about?

This Tweet sure didn't age well.

China has been working very hard to contain the Coronavirus. The United States greatly appreciates their efforts and transparency. It will all work out well. In particular, on behalf of the American People, I want to thank President Xi!

I guess when Trump says he doesn't take any responsibility, he really means it!

Okay, Mel. Once someone professes what their internal motivations were for a particular statement, I accept it at face value. I do think though that a lot of times, the perception of emotion in someone is a reflection of gender bias. It's even a bias a lot of people don't even know they have until someone points it out.

One last word on this, and then I'll yield. Political correctness is a phantom enemy. Recognizing unconscious biases that are also unhealthy and actively working against them because they are harmful is not something to fear.

The latest from researchers is there is no doubt that this virus has a natural origin. If it were engineered or made in a laboratory, there would be tell-tale markers on its genome. Instead, they found plenty of genetic evidence that it evolved naturally. It might be interesting to ask your buddies who work in CRISPR or related fields and technologies what they think?

The cynic in me believes all these stories about it being engineered or accidentally released by the Chinese is just another right-wing effort to absolve Trump of complicity in our inadequate response. I'm looking at you senator Tom Cotton.

The WHO on January 23, 2020:

It is expected that further international exportation of cases may appear in any country. Thus, all countries should be prepared for containment, including active surveillance, early detection, isolation and case management, contact tracing and prevention of onward spread of 2019-NCoV infection and to share full data with WHO.

Trump on March 8, 2020:

They're trying to scare everybody, from meetings, cancel the meeting, close the schools - you know, destroy the country. And that's okay, as long as we can win the election.

It was a mistake in judgment, the appointment was cancelled, and this was back in 2017. Exactly how does this relate to the WHO's response to the Coronavirus?

W.H.O., Now Trump’s Scapegoat, Warned About Coronavirus Early and Often

The World Health Organization, always cautious, acted more forcefully and faster than many national governments. But President Trump has decided to cut off U.S. funding to the organization.

Look, you guys rewrite history all you want to vindicate yourselves for supporting this utter disaster of a Presidency, but I promise most of the US and the world is just not buying it.

"The sources believe the initial transmission of the virus – a naturally occurring strain that was being studied there – was bat-to-human and that "patient zero" worked at the laboratory, then went into the population in Wuhan."

Researchers will eventually learn the origin of the virus as they did for SARS, which surfaced in 2003. It did take many years, though. It's incredible what they can learn from studying the genetics of the virus as it's collected from different regions. So, I do not doubt we will learn about the viruses' origins. I also don't doubt the Chinese were working on Coronaviruses in their labs. Lots of researchers all over the world work with coronaviruses in their labs. We will see, of course, but I remain highly skeptical there is a nefarious origin to this virus.
