when you cross an LX-10 and an LX-3

Posted By Evan Reed

If anyone is interested, I'll keep them posted with progress on this project. I actually just finished up getting the proper gear reduction so I can use the larger RA gear with the Meade Dec motor. I used an old fried 1/8 rpm motor gear box and did some tweaking and rearranging of the gears to get about the right gear ratio so I don't go zooming across the sky when trying to center an object...now the only problems left to overcome are that darned counterweight problem, building part where the scope actually mounts, and obtaining a wedge for this puppy when it's all complete (or building one). The rest is all just hacking, drilling, and tapping. Wish me luck!

Wow Herb, don't you have enough on your hands without rounding up misplaced ads too?

A real spider in my SCT tube

Posted By Evan Reed

Hi,
Although I don't know anything concerning the effects of dead insects on transmission coatings, I do follow the old saying, dont open the OTA unless you have to. With the SCTs if your alignment of the corrector is off a little, it really throws off the view. Since it isn't affecting the view, I personally would leave it be. However if you do happen to take the scope apart to remove the body, be sure to make an alignment mark on the corrector cell, and the tube (one that you won't accidently wipe off- an etched line is always a good idea) that way you can put it back together in exactly the same orientation.

PS - dont rotate the secondary mirror. I had a SCT a long time ago where I rotated the secondary, and the corrector turned too...took forever to get it back how it was!

how heavy are your SCTs?

Posted By Evan Reed

Ha! Answered part of my own question...Celestron's site lists their 11" at 27.5 lbs and their 9.25" is only 20 lbs. Meade's site however is a little more troublesome with finding info like this, so if someone happens to know (or wouldnt mind weighing their's) that would be great!

I think I might be having telescope envy in this one!

This is from the next telescope over looking at the scope we are using.

Untouched photo- lucky shot

Nice shot Greg...Just curious if the plane was heading towards or away from the moon.

There is no such thing as...

I once mounted just an SLR camera on a GEM that I regularly used for an 8" newt. I did this for a lunar eclipse, and that was the smallest mount I had that would track. I had to add some weight to the camera side to keep it balanced!

Looking for threaded stock

Posted By Evan Reed

If you are unable to find the threaded rod, you may want to try finding a bolt of the propper diamater and pitch, and cutting off the head. You may bave better luck with this as specific threaded rod is often harder to come by.

image quality of optical fiber for astro use?

Posted By Evan Reed

That is an interesting idea. I would think that the primary problem would be making the fibers small enough the obtain good resolution. If you think of the average CCD chip with pixels on the order of microns across, it might be challenging to reach that level of resolution by using fiber optics. My main question would be: why would you want to? I'm having trouble thinking of an application for that that cannot be met cheaper and easier using already existing technology and products.
