Why is everyone selling their orion/skywatcher 120ED

Posted By George Mavromates

There have been many 120eds for sale lately. Orion even cut their price earlier this year. Are these 120 ED pieces of Junk. Are they worth the risk buying one? I have heard conflicting stories.

Has anyone seen or tested the TAL 125mm refractor scope in the US? The tal 100 were a decent scope. Is it available in the US? Have they made any apos?

Does anyone know anything about the Russian TAL 125 refractor? Can it be bought in the states. It's supposed to be better then it's Chinese counterparts

LXD55 AR5 and 6 questions

Posted By George Mavromates

I have a Meade 127ED mounted on a LXD-55 mount. The ota and finder weigh 20 LBs. At high powers there is a lot of vibrations. You will have to change the legs if you get the AR6. If you look you can find a 127ed for around $1250 on astromart. it is a good Ed scope with little color.

TMB Achromat any good?

Posted By George Mavromates

I did ask Markus that question. He did say it is a very well built achromat. Much better then the syntas (should be its double the price). He did say their is some chromatic aberition but not much. I did ask if they were comparable to the Meade EDs. Markus said that the Mead had better color correction. Which that would be do to the ED glass. I am waiting to see the first in the field observations of the planets. I wonder if they will be as good as the D&G refractors since they are alot faster. One caveat the TBM are lighter about 17lbs which makes for a lighter, cheaper mount requirement instead of a G11.

D&G vs Meade APO ???

Posted By George Mavromates

I have a 127 ed the color correction is excellent. The trick is proper collimation. I can't comment on the D&G since I have never observed through one but to get same color collection you would be looking at a lot bigger (F12-15 VS F9.3)scope and different mounting requirements. See Meade Refractor group in yahoo forum . See some of the reviews on cloudynights.com

Which refractor?

Posted By George Mavromates

I had a Meade 127ED color correction on mine was excellent. I could push it to 60X per inch on good nights. See my review on cloudy nights. I believe you you would be happier with a 150ed.You would have a nice 6" scope. The Larger scope would need at least a eq 6 mount to handle. Even a synta 6" with a properly fitted chromacorector would cost around $1100 and offer you very good images. You can get more power and higher resolution. The larger aperture always comes in handy. See Yahoo meade refractor group for more comments.I am presently using a 7" Meade mak. You might consider one. Optics are execellent. I used it this morning on Mars under hazy skies. Even though it had not completely cooled the images were excellent and refractor like. It did compare with my Meade 127ed. An it does have 7" of aperture. On the moon it blows the meade out of the water, absolutely no comparison and it does take lots of power when condition are right. A used one would cost you around $1500. Only con, it's heavy and needs to cool down. Your choice.

Anyone Else Having trouble with Mars??

Posted By George Mavromates

What type scope is it? Did you give it enough time to cool off?

Time to 'fess up - similar to Mars again.. post

Posted By George Mavromates

My view of Mars last night in NE FL 11pm was slightly better then the photo. Using a Meade Mak 7 f15 cooled for 2 hours, a Celestron barlow and a 17mm Orion Plossel. The F15 sure helps. The Pole was better defined. Using a red filter and even a Lumicon UHC filter I could discern more of the land masses. Again I did expect better.
