Great scope for a Great price

Posted By victor truglio

Anyone out there looking for a nice scope that won't
break the bank.
Try the Celestron XLT120 achro. Usually sold with the white
CG4 eq mount, most Celestron dealers will sell you the ota
without the mount in the $350 price range.
1000mm FL, F8.3, rack & pinion focuser, finder, rings and
a dovetail.
I have compared the optics on mine to other scopes I have owned:
Sky-Watcher gold series 120ed
Celestron C6R
Orion/Vixen 120 Neo-achro

The XLT120 has better color correction when viewing the moon
and Jupiter then all but the Sky-Watcher 120ed and to tell
you the truth, it's not far behind, and 1/4 the price.
Stars are pinpoint and the scope has excellent contrast.
The tube is also super light and is rock solid on a
CG5.

This scope is in the price range of a C6 SCT or a ED80.
At 1000mm FL the scope is a very good lunar and planetary scope or throw in a 35 Panoptic and your getting almost a
2.5 degree FOV for deep sky.

I am more impressed on how good this scope is for the money
then my C11CF.

Meade ETX-125 toy or real scope

Posted By victor truglio

I am looking at the Meade ETX-125 and need some opinions.
Is this a real scope or a toy? Concerned mostly
with the optical performance.
Thanks

Meade 127ed vs ES 127ed

Posted By victor truglio

Trying to decide between and older Meade 127ed f9 and
an Explore Scientific es127ed f7.5
Of course one is a doublet and one is a triplet.
For visual use, mostly planets which do you prefer.
Thanks,
PS there is also a $500 difference in price,
both are used but mint condition

I PULLED THE TRIGGER

Posted By victor truglio

I KNOW. I WAS JUST GOING TO CHANGE THE FOCUSER AND
TRY IT OUT. THE BEARINGS ON IT WERE SHOT. YOU ALMOST NEEDED PLYERS TO TURN THE KNOB. BUT THEN ONE THING LED TO ANOTHER, BEFORE I NEW IT, IT WAS APART IN PIECES IN MY GARAGE.

size of secondary mirrow for 12.5" F6 scope

Posted By victor truglio

i have a teeter 12.5 f5. it came with a 2.6 and a
3.1 secondary. i am told by my local astronomy guru
that the 3.1 is the right size. but i see alot of larger scopes with a 2.6. i have only used it with
the 3.1 secondary and it seems fine.

Mount question

Posted By victor truglio

i owned 2 of those mounts
the celestron asgt cg5
and the orion svp
of those 2 i would go with the celestron,
handles more weight because of the 2" tripod legs.

Only One Scope

Posted By victor truglio

Thats a big range of value.
I think you should narrow it down a bit.

Help with purchasing used C8+

Posted By victor truglio

BEST THING TO DO IS SEARCH THE ARCHIEVE CLASSIFIEDS
HERE ON ASTROMART AND SEE WHAT THEY HAVE SOLD FOR.
I JUST PICKED UP A MID 80'S C8 AND THE OTPICS ARE
GREAT.
ITS HARD WITH THE THE EXTRAS ENVOLVED.
I WOULD TRY TO GET A PRICE ON JUST THE SCOPE.
UNLESS YOU REALLY NEED OR WANT THE EXTRAS OFFERED.

Celestron 9.25 vs. Classic 1970 orange 8 Celestron

Posted By victor truglio

I have owned the c6, c8, c9.25, and c11. The c9.25 will give you a brighter image then the c8, but there are some other things to consider. What mount you will be using. You can still use a c8 with a lighter weight mount. But the c9.25 at 20lbs ota only, needs a much stronger mount.

Cel. 80ED or Cel. Onynx 80EDF

Posted By victor truglio

I have owned the Celestron 80ed. Excellent color
correction and a very sharp image. The weak part
about the scope is the focuser, but if your buying a used one and getting a deal, say around $300, you cant complain
The Onyx is much nicer fit and finish wise, with a better focuser. The Onyx, now at $399 is an f6.25 compared to the 80ed's f7.5, so I would guess maybe not as good on the false color. Both scopes are good for the money.
