Worth the price?

You could always try the 9mm UO ortho with your 2x barlow. That's what I did for Mars with great results. The eye relief isn't too bad on the 9mm either. Of coarse that's more glass in the picture, but I couldn't complain with the view.

15mm Pans for binoviewing, any good?

Posted By Jason Paoletti

Can't comment on how they are in a binoviewer, but I think they are great mono. Yes ER is a bit tight. Some people have no problem in that area while others hate it. I found I was just able to take in the full FOV. The most important thing for me was I was able to blink without smearing up the lense. Pans as I belive you know are very sharp and should do a great job on the planets. I put my 24mm Pan in my TV 2x barlow and it blew away my TV 11mm plossl on Saturn at just 102x. If you can handle the ER you should be pleased.

TV Plossls/Powermates: Poor Man's EP Set?

Posted By Jason Paoletti

For a common 1200mm focal length (10" f/5, 8" f/6, 6" f/8) this would give 38x, 48x, 60x, 94x, 120x, 150x, 188x, 240x, 300x.

I also have a 1219 fl scope. (8" f/6) I am currently debating upgrading to widefield ep's, but this is what I have used for a while and have been happy with. 24mm Panoptic. 15mm TV plossl, 11mm TV plossl, 9mm UO ortho, 2x TV barlow. I get 50x, 81x, 100x, 111x, 135x, 163x, 222x, 271x. I mainly look at open clusters and planets. Also enjoy globs and brighter nebulae. My most used powers are 50x, 135x, 163x, 222x, 271x.
Good luck,
Jason

Yet *another* newbie eyepiece question....

Posted By Jason Paoletti

There won't be much of a difference in the quality of view you will get. Since you have a set of plossls already, I would consentrate on the fl's you use most often and then upgrade those. If you like plossls you certainly can't go wrong with TV's they run about $80.00 new and around $60.00 used. The Celestron/Orion/Antares Ultima/Ultrascopic/Plossls would be another good choice along with University Optics orthos.

TeleVue Radians or Pentax XW's?

Posted By Jason Paoletti

Don't know if you need the eye relief or not, but don't rule out the T6 Naglers. I just picked up the 7mm and it's as sharp as anything I've seen.

Suggestions for a worry free, sub 400.00 scope?

Posted By Jason Paoletti

I'd go for an 8" dob. I went with Discovery myself and have been very pleased. Yes their delivery times can be long, but these are usually in the larger scopes. Don't forget you will want another eyepiece or two so you may want to go with the 6". Depending on what you like to look at will depend on the ep's you want. (high/med/low power) If planets are your main interest the 6" is plenty. If a little of everything you might want the 8".

do mine! do mine!

Posted By Jason Paoletti

I was very happy with my TV plossls at 25mm,15mm,11mm and TV 2x barlow. I have an 8" f/6 which has pretty much the same fl as your 10".
This gave me 48x, 81x, 110x, 162x, and 220x. I didn't barlow the 25mm.

Now if you have some money to burn, which I didn't, but did any way, I got a 24mm Pan, 13mm, 9mm, 7mm, and 5mm T6 Naglers.

Which would you get?

Posted By Jason Paoletti

Thanks all so the replies so far. I would like to get the 80ED however I keep hearing about the quality optically and mechanically on the Stellarvue being outstanding. The 80/9D Is supposed to used a higher quality abbe rating in its lens for even better color correction. I know it's no apo, but reports are very good for this scope. Having never looked through a refractor, but have looked through a 4.5" reflector will a 80mm scope be able to resolve say M35 in Gemini? how about the double cluster?

I will be keeping the 8" for better views, but as it is, I've only gotten the scope out maybe 4 times this year.
