Rings versus clamshell

Posted By David Pitre

Dmitri,
I use some relatively cheap Vixen rings on my FS102-NSV . They are very rigid. I personally like the look and simplicity of the Tak clamshell, but have not tried one. If they were equal, I'd use the clamshell. I think it would have to be exceedingly well built and engineered to be equal to 2 well spaced rings though.

Through with Discovery Telescopes (Long)

I had been planning on purchasing a Discovery 17.5" primary for a ATM dob.
This gives me pause though.
what are the alternatives in their price range?

Dust Prevention

I in my opinion, any glass you put in the optical path adds up to degrade the image.
Unless you have some reason to to keep the rear opening open, I wouldn't bother.

So how about the 7mm Type 1 vs the Type 6 ?
Other than eyerelief, how do they compare. (Light scatter, sharpness, and contrast.)

Best Observing Guide Book

It sort of depends on what aperture scope you are using and how dark your skies are. If your scope is at least 7-8"and you have or can get to fairly dark skies, I'd say yes NSOG.
Much smaller aperture, and more than 3/4 of the book will be useless.

About contrast

Posted By David Pitre

Has anyone tried the 499 FL-D by B+W ?
I used one on Mars and found it to provide greater contrast than any other filter and added very little
obtrusive hue. (It is a pale magenta color).
These filters are used in photography to correct florescent lighting.
It brings out red and blue features, while blocking some green.
I've heard of people combining it with the Baader Neodymium for use on Mars.
I have yet to give it a try on Jupiter and have heard no reports of it.

I have a 10" mirror with certificate

So is Mr Ostahowski still making Discovery's mirrors?
Unless I'm missing something an 18" (or 17.5") mirror is about $1000. more from Terry Ostahowski than from Discovery.

12.5 f/5 R.F Royce vs 12.5 f/5 Discovery Primary M

For what it's worth, I believe there is some question as to whether or not Terry Ostahowski is still making all or any of Discovery's mirrors. I spoke with him a number of weeks ago, and he informed me he had not made any Discovery mirrors for months, and would not assure that a Discovery scope would have his mirror in it. Discovery is selling a lot of scopes and I doubt they have some kind of stock pile of mirrors.
Ostahowski is selling his mirrors from his own business (www.ostahowskioptics.com)
