5mm eyepiece.....

Posted By Jay Emirzian

I'd like to pick up a 5 mm eyepiece and a big fan of the Pentax line in short focal lengths and Naglers in long. I currently have the 7mm and 10.5mm XL's. My scope is a 15" Obsession without drives or a tracking platform. So being all manual it is important to have an eyepiece with a larger AFOV. I had owned the baader hyperion 5mm for a while, but sold it because of the way it fit in my focuser. It was a good eyepiece. Fairly sharp at the edge of the field with only a hint of false color around the edge. I guess my biggest question would be how much of a diffrence would I see in the 5.2 XL vs the 5 XW? What did they change? Is the extra 5 degrees worth spending extra money for? Should I go for the Nagler because of the 82 degrees? I'm not a real big fan of the Naglers for shorter focal lengths.

Thanks,
Jay

Question about Clouds???????

Posted By Jay Emirzian

I didn't know where to start this thread........

I am wondering if there is a program/website that can tell you how many clear nights per year their were by location? For example....From location 01095 their were 100 clear nights out of 365. Does somthing like that exist?

Thanks,
Jay

21 Ethos vs. ES20

Posted By Jay Emirzian

Had an opportunity to observe with both the 21 Ethos and ES20 last night. The telescope was a 7" TMB and the majority of the target was the moon. I use a 1.00 dioptrx and made sure each corrector was perfectly rotated for maximum sharpness. Both eyepieces accept the dioptrx system.

Both eyepieces showed a hint of false color in the outer 15-20% off axis. On axis....NOTHING. The color wasn't major, but there was a slight yellow halo. A Lumicon rotating polarizer seemed to calm this down. Both eyepieces were tack sharp and I couldn't make a decision which was sharper. The only advantage of the Ethos was it had a slight bit more contrast then the ES20. If you didn't have both eyepieces to compare it wouldn't jump out at you. The owner of the 21 Ethos made the same conclusions.

The eyepieces had such a huge FOV you really had to look around in the eyepiece to take it all in. It really gave you the sense you were looking though a port hole. Awesome experience!!

So the question you have to ask yourself is the slight bit of contrast worth the extra cash? That is a decision only YOU can make. I'm going to stick with the ES20 untill I have the extra few hundred dollars. I can justify spending the money elsewhere. I will say that the 13 and 8 Ethos eyepieces I own WILL NOT get replaced with the ES line.

Question about Tak Focusers

Posted By Jay Emirzian

Hi Everyone,
I was going to post this on the Tak forum but figured this would get more traffic. When using an equatorial mounted Takahashi refractor, how do you rotate the diagonal for comfortable viewing? To make the question more specific....Does the Tak have a rotateable focuser or do I need to readjust the diagonal clamp?

Thanks,
Jay

Home Planetarium

Posted By Jay Emirzian

Hi Everyone,
I didn't know where to post this. I am looking for a home planetarium for my son's room. He is REALLY getting into astronomy even at a young age. I think he would absolutely flip if I got him the night sky on his ceiling. The thought I had was the Sega Homestar Planetarium. Any suggestions?

Thanks,
Jay

Question about filters

Posted By Jay Emirzian

I guess I should have reworded my question. Will the filter do anything to the image quality in that position as opposed to screwed directly into the eyepiece?

PST vs SolarMax40

Posted By Jay Emirzian

Phil,
I can agree with John. I have looked though the PST twice now, once at WSP and another at NEAF. Although the SolarMax40 looked better, I think the PST is a great buy for the money. That is if you can get one.
