44% of Americans want Bush back...

Posted By Edward Wiley

Wrong question. What does it say about the 44%? Well, I think that was about the same number who voted for McCain and Palin (45.7%, I think). Sound to me like nothing has changed at all.

Canon lens suggestions wanted

Posted By Edward Wiley

I use Olympus OM lenses and have had good luck with them via an Fotodiox adapter the $29 one). KEH sells them. Not apo, but good, light, sharp lenses that are extremely reasonable. I have 28mm, 50mm, 135mm and 200mm from my film days.

Anyone do any real science from home?

Posted By Edward Wiley

Chad:

Check out the Journal of Double Star Observations (Google JDSO). You will find an international community with mostly amateurs supported by pros who do all sorts of interesting stuff with double stars. This is a very satisfying area for amateur research leading to actual publication. Reading JDSO will give you an idea of what is "up" in this field of research that is very open to amateurs with modest (or not) equipment.

Canon XTi /400d

It has to be at least as good as my XT. Its just that the XTi lasted such a shot time before the XSi appeared and it has live focus.

Why do Atheists...

Geez, if I substitute "creationist" for atheist" in your post: Is the pot calling the kettle black, or what? Fact is, that Web site seems to me to be mostly informational not confrontational. Just my opinion.

O-III and a dark sky site

Works very well indeed, and I have used an OIII on scopes as small as 6". Try it on NGC 7000 at a dark site, you will be impressed.

"Shipping to CONUS only" Annoying (classifieds)

Posted By Edward Wiley

I had a G8 for "CONUS ONLY" just because its heavy. I was contacted by a fellow astromarter in Canada. I agreed to the sale via USPS at his request, which was actually more expensive on the front end but cheaper on the rear end (read no broker's fees). PayPal: No problems at all; both parties satisfied. Next time I will list "US and Canada."

Religion in public schools....

Posted By Edward Wiley

I'll jump in. I am not sure that teaching about religion is prohibited in public schools. I think that teaching a comparative religion course or a course on mythology is permitted. (Naturally, some may think these are synonymous courses, others have different opinions.) What is prohibited is advocating a particular religious belief.
