New look for an old horse

Posted By ANJAL SHARMA

I had my Orion ED80 powdercoated a sky white in color to match my other two refractors, a Tak FS-60C and an APM 130/780. I got a local powdercoating service to do it for me for the very reasonable price of 70 bucks, and I really like the results. Here's a picture of the newly powdercoated ED80...

Metal Dustcap for Orion ED80.

Posted By ANJAL SHARMA

Does anyone know where I can get a quality metallic dustcap to replace the cheesy plastic one on the Orion ED80? I measure the inside diameter of the dustcap to be 118 mm. Thanks.

M31 - Ancient photons with a resurrected classic

Posted By ANJAL SHARMA

This was taken with a recently resurrected and upgraded Takahashi Epsilon 200 astrograph at f/4 riding on a Takahashi NJP Temma 2 mount at the Sam Houston State University observatory in Huntsville, TX using the QHY8 one shot CCD camera. 17 x 5 min subs, calibrated, aligned and stacked in Nebulosity 2 and final processing in Photoshop CS2. A larger version can be found here:

Resale value of APM Refractors.

Posted By ANJAL SHARMA

Is it my imagination or is it generally true that APM refractors do not offer as good a resale value as say Takahashi or AP?

APM (TS) FF2.0 Field Flattener performance?

Posted By ANJAL SHARMA

Has anyone here tried using the new FF2.0 that is a TS product distributed through APM dealers such as Teton Telescopes? Apparently this flattener is supposed to work with any refractor in the f/5 to f/7.5 range and has a rather large recommended chip to flattener distance range which varies between 100 to 110mm depending on the focal ratio of the refractor used. I just acquired one from Mark at Teton (outstanding service BTW) and I want to use it with my APM 130/780 LW triplet Apo and the QHY8 CCD camera. If anyone has any real use experience with this FF2.0, I'd greatly appreciate input on useage and performance that I can expect with it. Any images collected with this FF2.0 and a comparison image without would also be welcome. Thanks.

M13 with the APM 130/780 LW triplet apo

Posted By ANJAL SHARMA

Hi All,

This is an image of M13 (33x5min) with the APM 130/780 LW triplet apo and the QHY8 one shot CCD camera. A TS-optical FF2.0 was used to flatten the field. We finally had a break in the clouds last evening and I couldn't pass up a chance to stay up late and image despite coming in to work all bleary eyed today.

Tie down solutions for roll off roof?

Posted By ANJAL SHARMA

I'm very close to completing a roll-off roof observatory in my backyard. I was wondering if anyone has any suggestions on how to tie down the roof when I'm done for the night and also how to tie the roof down when it is rolled off? It would be most helpful if people with roll-off roof observatories would chime in with pictures of how they do it. Thanks.

Question about SolarMax 60 and Adapter Plates

Posted By ANJAL SHARMA

I'm considering purchasing a SolarMax 60 and mounting it to my 6 inch f/8 achro. But I was wondering if someone here could tell me how the SolarMax 60 front element is secured to the adapter plate that goes on the scope objective. Does it screw in or simply plop in with another means to secure it in the hole? I may want to have a local machine shop fabricate a suitable adapter plate for me which is why I'm asking. Thanks and if someone would post some pix to elaborate I'd be much obliged.

Origin of astigmatism in doublet achro refractors?

Posted By ANJAL SHARMA

I've seen some examples where there was noticeable astigmatism in the common 5 and 6 inch types. Any idea where the astigmatism in these originates from? Tilt between the two elements? Something else? Any way to reduce astigmatism or eliminate it entirely in these? Thanks.

Under or Overcorrection via Interferogram?

Posted By ANJAL SHARMA

Hi All,

I'm shopping for a refractor objective for an ATM project. The company rep said that he could let me have the interferograms of the objectives that he has in stock. Is there any way that the interferograms could be used to determine whether the objective is under or overcorrected? Also, can these interferograms be used to determine how much astigmatism (if any) is present in the objectives? Thank you.
