Lumicon Halpha any good?

Posted By Vince Clements

I had A Lumicon H-alpha filter. It is recomended to use it on a focal length 2000mmm of greater. I used it on a Meade 10" scope with a focal length of 2500mm. It gave acceptable views of the prominences but no detail on the surface. Also the two biggest complains I had were that I could not get a full disc image in the eyepiece and the background sky was always pink. I went as far as to flock the inside of my scope thinking that would help cut down on stray light but the sky was still pink. Now if you can live with only seeing a partial solar disc and the background sky not being black, the Lumicon filter shows prominences very well. I included a photo taken on my first day to show you the image you can have. Mind you it has been run through photo shop. My advise to you is to look into the new Coronado PST. If it is half as good as the buzz surrounding it, for $499.00 it will be the hot item of 2004. I hope this helps you. It is only my $.02 worth

New Coronado beginner scope

Posted By Vince Clements

With the 40mm aperature, 400mm focal length, a 5mm blocking filter and the supplied 12.5mm eyepiece will you get a full solar disc image? Will the PST give you a nice black surrounding sky? Is the 18mm CEMAX worth the money for a casual observer? I use to own a Lumicon 1.5A filter and was not able to get the full disc and the background sky was pink. I am really interested in this new item and would like to know what to expect visually before getting on the list. Thanks, Vince

GM8 adequate for a C 9.25?

Posted By Vince Clements

If it is any help, I have a metal tube 9.25 on a Meade LXD55 mount. I replaced the stock aluminum legs with some oak ones and that really dampened the shakes. The OTA weighs in at about 25lbs and the whole package, scope, tripod, drives and weights, weighs around 55lbs. I can carry the whole set up out assembled. And the rumors are true, the 9.25 is an awsome scope. Vince

astronomy question about Revelation

Posted By Vince Clements

Since nobody seems to want to even try to answer my question, I'll give the answer I was looking for. The first star had no name and the second star does. This means, to me, the first one was not discovered and blindsided the earth and the second was discovered before it hit, hence the name. No deeper meaning. Geez people, lighten up. Vince

Concerning communion & Catholicism

Posted By Vince Clements

This is a problem I see in the Catholic Church. They have stepped in and made themselves an inter mediator between God and man. This is a direct violation of the teachings of Christ. The Catholics believe that through the communion THEY hand out you actually receive Christ and salvation. If that were true Jesus would have lied to the thief on the cross next to Him when He told him today you will be in paradise with me. That can't be unless he received communion from a priest. Communion is nothing more than a remembrance of what Jesus did on the cross for redemption of sin. Vince

Absolutely Amazing (long)

Posted By Vince Clements

Garry, When I eventually get my PST, I have already set up in my office the drive base and forks from an ETX90 on the tripod legs from my LXD55. I replaced the ones on my mount with oak. THe drive base and forks I purchased on Astromart really cheap. Added a home made bracket and wedge. Now all I need is the PST. Vince

What Can I Really See in a PST

Posted By Vince Clements

David, With a PST you will be able to see flares, prominences, filaments, spiculae, faculae, and active regions. Now as other people have posted, the resolution is that of a 40mm scope but the sun is a very large object and so are the features. If you want more info go to this link:

http://www.coronadofilters.com/cgi/display_gallery.cgi?gallery=pst

It is the PST photo gallery on the Coronado website. That will give you a good idea on what to expect. My advise to you is BUY ONE! The PST is a great and relatively inexpensive way to get into h-alpha viewing
