Help with Canon IS Binoculars

Posted By Scott Schneeweis

I have a pair of 18x50IS...love them..the weight and slightly reduced FOV is an insignificant tradoff for me given the additional magification and potentency in such a compact package (this is where the IS technology really struts its stuff).....initially tried the 15x50's but after giving the 18x50s a go, the smaller amplification is a disappointment...

Feedback on turrets?

Posted By Scott Schneeweis

I have been using the Van Slyke Hexagonal 2" Turret on my C-14 and cannot imagine life without it. Have it loaded with type 4/5/6 Naglers...not having to fumble around in the dark to find and insert ep'S during public star parties makes toggling between magnifications a real joy...obviously being on a GEM helps as it allows me to slide the OTA forward to offset the Turret mass. I have both the Astro-physics Maxbright diagonal and turret and there is no apparent difference in visual performance...the other thing about the Van Slyke is that it has an integrated filter slot adapter so that a filter can be inserted and shared out very easily to all the Eyepieces...not having to remove the EP's means less contamination of the diagonal as well...I say go for it...

Meade Press Release - confirmation of bad news

Posted By Scott Schneeweis

In their greed, Meade gobbled up the best thing going in Solar instrumentation for the amateur - Coronado - relocated their facility (most of us in the community new/felt that was a terrible move because of the attendant risk)...and now the other shoe has dropped. Nice going Meade!

NASA new idea , and it makes sence

There is limited value added in sending humans all the way to Mars orbit but not going the last "mile" to set them on the surface. Any robotic control that requires execution from Martian orbit can also be acomplished from Earth - the only difference is round trip time. Having said that, robotics are not as capable as people in assessing and reacting to their environment, or autonomously changing the game plan after deployment. We need to put humans on Mars - not only to facilitate exploration but to incentivize development and validate technologies that will allow people to sustain themselves and to foster spin-off technology that will benefit those remaining behind (much as the Apollo program did and continues to do to this day). Most importantly, we cannot afford to delay propagation of our species off Earth to increase the probability that humans will continue to survive. Its our absolute imperative and obligation to do so.

Large Uncontrollable Satellite Falling Down Soon

Posted By Scott Schneeweis

Hopefully at least a small segment survives reentry and lands in an accessible location so I can add it to my collection of space artifacts!
