I felt the same way when I saw that broad continue to mention his brothers death. There have been other complaints about her asking questions to provoke this kind of reaction from other athletes. I think she should be fired or made to publicly apologize to all of them. :C

Hi Rod,
Thanks for the Heads Up on Pinos. I felt this was the case and we are taking the club to Ballinger Canyon instead of Pinos tonight. Not sure if the weather is going to cooperate, but we will give it a try.
I plan to go next week on Tuesday or Wednesday with Don Kelley to Pinos if the weather calms down a bit. New Moon is Tuesday so either day would be good. Probably would just spend the night.

Mt Pinos Closure

Hey Rod,
I will be going to my alternate site for a while I think. Ballinger has as good of sky, about the same darkness and a bigger horizon, plus milder temperatures for the fall and winter.
I may still get up there again this year, but I do plan on using the lower altitude site. The wife likes the milder temperature. smile

Well that settles that, not that the weather is helping us anyway. :S
I am hoping it will clear as predicted, but so far it is not. If it does, then I will go to Wind Wolves Preserve, a local private site.
BUt I am not hold my breath. :C

Hi Rod,
Wow, it was 28 degrees at Lockwood Valley 3,000 feet below you. I guess the Santa Ana Winds must have made it warmer up above? Strange. :S
We had a good night at the LAAS site with about 20 people present and everything from Refractors to Off-axis reflectors there.
Glad to hear that all went well at MT Pinos.

Hi Jim,
this is probably controlled by a relay. Check the wiring schematics and find the location of this relay and add a extension wire to the ground for it out to a switch that is easy to reach.

Darkest site near southern California

I would suggest that Joshua Tree National Monument would be your best choice. The lack of mountains makes the air a bit better than right next to the Sierras. There are quite a few nice campgrounds there and in the spring during the week it should be fairly empty with more people on the weekends of course.
The area above Lake Isabella is dark, but seeing is not that great. I have been there for a week at a time and never had a good night there. The air is always moving it seems from upper air over the mountains.

Darkest site near southern California

Well, for the darkest Bortle 1 skies, it is probably going to be Hole in the Wall in the Mojave National Preserve. The skies are rated at this link at Bortle 1 as dark as it gets. Nice campground, good roads in from Essex. Water, toilets, picnic tables, trash cans and $12 a night.

I will be going there myself this April for a week or at least several days. Temps are pretty nice at that time, 60-75f days and 40f nights.
A bit out of the way, but that is what you want for astronomy.
