Reid has to know better. Doesn't he?

I mentioned this in another post Mel. I really don't know for sure if he believes it or it's just a ploy for votes. Then again, he might be right since nobody is working construction in Nevada, legal or not. Thanks Mr. President.

From the Onion, it's pretty funny.

This is pretty darned funny as well. Tucker Carlson and Keith Olbermann have been going at it pretty hard of late. The other day Carlson was able to buy the domain name keitholbermann.com. Olbermann is threatening to sue, for what I don't know. Tucker is sticking it to him further by using the email address: [email protected]. The website reports daily on Olbermann's rants; it's brutal. I feel sorry for "bathtub boy" Olbermann....not.

"Oh, hello there, Keith Olbermann! How are you doing? We here at KeithOlbermann.com hope you're having a really excellent day. If you're not, however, please feel free to email Tucker Carlson at [email protected], and he'll be happy to assist you."

"TUESDAY, JULY 13: Longtime Yankees owner George Steinbrenner died on Tuesday, causing Keith Olbermann to ruminate fondly and at great length about Keith Olbermann. He played clips of himself interviewing Steinbrenner in 1982, and recounted the great long list of ways that Steinbrenner had loved him:..."

"WEDNESDAY, JULY 14: Tonight, Rush Limbaugh was declared the Worst Person in the World. Also, the sun rose in the East, the Pope continued to be Catholic and somewhere, a bear "hosted 'Countdown'" in the woods."

Certainly good for a laugh, especially if you're as big a fan of Olbermann as I am. wink

Religion forum ruined

Herb has just split the Religion forum into two groups, believers and atheists. Where is the fun in that? Will I be banned if I debate the atheists down in their own forum?

This is basically censorship. Imagine splitting politics into two forums; “liberal and “conservative . Can you say boring?

In my no-holds barred view, the evisceration of "Religion" is a bad move Herb. Maybe this new forum will make up for it. We'll see.

Jim

All Herb did was make it easier for God to sort out those going to hell. They are easier to find now, one-stop shopping. It's like COSTCO for the damned.
Mike

Wow, I like that. I quote your post and it translates it into Russian.

Iraq: Was It Worth It?

Posted By Mike Strieber

Rod Kaufman said:

American losses:
4400 dead
34000 wounded
1.5 million engaged in the war in Iraq
Iraqi losses:
35000-100,000+ dead, depending on sources
Wounded: thousands more
Additional losses: weekly from ongoing sectarian violence
Cost factor: Roughly a trillion with billions unaccounted for and lost to fraud, misuse and the morphing of the coalition of the willing into the coalition of the billing.
Collateral losses:
A strengthened Iran
Years of neglect in Afghanistan
Nobody is declaring victory
Iraqi viewpoint of the result of the war: "We used to have one Saddamm now we have a thousand".
Conclusion: one of the biggest foreign policy blunders in the history of the United States.

For the most part Rod, I agree with you. Other than perhaps the "biggest foreign policy blunder" line. I've heard senior Democrats and pundits use this terminology and I believe it's nothing but hyperbole, political grandstanding and frankly somewhat Alan Grayson-esque. While significant no doubt, I don't think it ranks up there with sitting idly by while Hitler builds his war machine...that resulted in the death of 50 million; getting involved with Vietnam, resulting in 60,000 American deaths; decimating our military in the lead up to the Korean War to the point that when we entered our unpreparedness led to the slaughter of thousands of American soldiers at the hands of the North Koreans and Chinese; many would suggest being the only nation to use nuclear weapons is our biggest mistake.

I guess you could argue it was "one" of the biggest foreign policy blunders in history but I think that statement is being used as a political weapon more than it is a statement of fact.

I also often wonder what Iraq would look like now if we didn't invade. Americans were already souring on the billions spent annually for "containment". Would we still be containing him? I doubt it and so where would that put us/Saddam? Would he be a world player again, financing/supporting terrorism, actually have WMD? I also don't buy the argument that Iran is stronger because of us going into Iraq. As long as we were "containing" Saddam he was no threat to Iran. If you argue that we would have stopped containing Iraq and let them build their military again as a counter to Iran (which would never have happened) I think that turns into a false assumption as well. Strong deterrence in the region in an attempt to counter Iran's boldness has proven worthless. Israel is the Iranian equalizer in the region, not Iraq, nor would they have been if we didn't invade. And we all know how much respect Iran shows Israel.

Burn A Koran Day?

Posted By Mike Strieber

I have an idea, let's stage a radical protest to protest radicalism! The members of this church who participate in the Koran burning are nothing less than douche-bags. And, pastor please; ditch the Civil War era moustache. Isn't it odd how frequently idiots look like idiots?

The term "un-American" is often abused; in this case it is warranted. Religious intolerance combined with a total disregard for the safety of our soldiers engaged in combat. It's not a stretch for me to call it bordering on treasonous.

Besides that, I'm ok with it. smile

I don't think our country should submit to this threat because that is what it is. Basically what he's saying is we either build it or we'll have hell to pay...
While the Imam stated he condemned all forms of terrorism, he was asked if he specifically condemned Hamas and the former was his response and not the latter. I recall Arafat saying essentially the same thing...

Rod,
I'm one of those who recognize their right to build it there but questioned their motives and rationale. Seeing the relevant portions of this interview with the Iman swayed my thinking into taking a more vigorous anti-ground zero mosque position. He didn't articulate the positive reasons why it should be built there but took the approach of threatening us with consenquences if we don't. The Iman did himself no favors in that interview.

Right Crook or Wrong Bore?

Posted By Mike Strieber

Lee Spain said:

If you had a choice and could vote for a charismatic crook who had pro-business, GOP, orthodox policies --OR-- a really boring, but honest, accountant lady who has no charisma, who would you choose? I think the crook could bring much needed economic development to the state, but he led one of the largest corporate medicare frauds in U.S. history. On the other hand, I don't agree with any of the Democrats policies, but she is not generally regarded as a crook. This is the WORST choice I've ever had as a voter EVER anywhere! When I was in Georgia I voted Libertarian one time because the GOP governor had a little bitty minor land scandal.

Yes, this is Rick Scott vs. Alex Sink for governor in Florida...

Interesting question Lee. I have a similar situation here in Nevada. Vote for Harry Reid who you know will spend this country into the abyss or vote for an uber-conservative with the mind of a eight year old. I have to go with the eight year old. My going in position this election cycle is vote for the person who can do the least amount of damage. I'm hoping Angle will go to Washington, do as she is told, and do nothing else but pull the right lever when it comes to voting on legislation. My general view is vote for the most conservative candidate on the ballot. I believe this country is more in need of conservative values than at any other time in its history. While I'm certainly no uber-conservative, nor do I agree with all conservative values, I firmly believe only conservative "fiscal" values will bring us out of the muck we find ourselves in now. For me the " economic muck" is the highest priority of all the issues facing this nation right now, including terrorism, Afghanistan, nuclear Iran, etc. That thought alone eliminates Harry Reid for me.

As far as being a crook, I've grown to tolerate some level of greed, dishonesty, and self-interest in politicians. They are pretty much all like that. That's some sad commentary for sure but it's reality. So unless they're molesting children, convicted murderers, etc., I look at the governing philosophy and try and overlook the flawed character traits as best I can.

Then I look at the bright side; at least my Tea Party candidate is not a witch! grin

Turn to Fox News. Turn off the sound. Every time the commentators run Christine O'Donnell's "I'm not a witch" commercial and talk about it, take a drink. I'm a teetotaller, but the rest of you should get pretty wasted! grin

How do you know when your campaign is in trouble? When you're defending yourself against accusations of being a witch. After all, if she really was a witch I think she would turn herself into a viable candidate.

What's your best quote this year?

Posted By Mike Strieber

Lee Spain said:

I like the quotes going back and forth in the Georgia gubernatorial race:

“Being called unethical by a group like CREW is literally like being called ugly by a possum, Deal said.

Deal’s line was a play on a barb Barnes used against him in a debate Tuesday. Barnes said Deal accusing him of being negative is "kind of like a possum telling a skunk his breath stinks. That's all I see on television, my new name, ‘Roybama.’

Any candidates near you guys have anything particularly quotable?

Sharon Angle telling Harry Reid to "man up" in their debate last night. If you didn't see the debate she hammered him left and right and Reid looked totally unprepared and rambled relentlessly. Very bad showing for Reid. Angle wasn't exactly polished but Reid looked so bad she looked like she was in a zone. Reid topped it off by looking for his notes for his closing statement; he wasted half his time searching through a ton of jumbled papers on his podium. Reminded me of the Nutty Professor (Jerry Lewis version).
