Need help -- again

For perspective, here is the same bird with some sanderlings nearby. At least, I think they are sanderlings.

If someone you knew was buying a new Losmandy G-11...

Posted By Louis Marchesi

Hi Jason,

I replaced the saddle plate on my G-11 with a Robin Casady "tip-in" saddle --> http://www.robincasady.com/Astro/dovetail.html

I also grabbed a 12V-18V converter from James Lacey. I include his web site here, but don't see the product. Perhaps you could contact him directly to see if he's still making them.

I store the equatorial head in a Pelican 1620.

Exit pupil

Posted By Louis Marchesi

Do you observe from a dark sky site? Do your pupils dilate to 6.8mm?

If the answer to either of those is "no" then I'd go with the smaller exit pupil. You'll be less prone to seeing defects in your own eye with the smaller exit pupil as well.

TV 41mm Pan or Pentax XL40W XW -- help me decide

Posted By Louis Marchesi

Thanks for the insights.

I am leaning slightly toward the Panoptic, but I may see if I can get my "local" astronomy store to lend me one of each.

My "gut" feeling is that I'll prefer the flat field to the more ergonomic design.

Monster Battery Power

Posted By Louis Marchesi

Hi Dan,

Where can I get an "isolator?" Once, I hooked up my Gemini (GOTO) and my dew heaters (Kendrick) off of a single battery with a Y-splitter. The Gemini did not like this. Would an "isolator" have helped? If I go into Radio Shack what do I ask for?

BTW, I have a 92 amp-hour battery in a box much like your setup. I am taking my TMB to the WSP. Think it will last me a week (I'm only running dew heaters and the mount electronics, I don't do imaging but I do have a laptop).

I was wondering if there is anybody here that observes around the State College area of Pennsylvania.

How about the Central Pennsylvania Observers (http://www.cpoclub.org/). They host the Black Forest Star Party in late summer, BTW.

Attaching scope to Gibraltar?

Posted By Louis Marchesi

David Johanson said:

I have an older Gibraltar mount and ash tripod. I'm wondering how a Televue scope attaches to the mount? I have used a Vixen style dovetail saddle that came with another mount but am wondering how Televue does it. I am expecting an Orion 80ED in a day or so that I plan on using with the Gibraltar and I'm interested in some sort of quick release attachment.
Any ideas?
Thanks
Dave

Hi Dave,

I am going from memory here. I no longer own a TV scope, but I still have the Gibraltar, which I use with my William Optics ZSFD80 "Anniversary" scope.

The TV scope had a "clamshell" ring, the bottom of which was flat and was tapped for 1/4-20 threads. The flat part of the clamshell rested in the cradle of the Gibraltar mount head and was affixed using two 1/4-20 wing nuts.

For my ZSFD80, I removed the Gibraltar head and replaced it with a Unistar Light Deluxe from Universal Astronomics.

Dispute With Coronado

Posted By Louis Marchesi

James,

My suggestion is to send a letter of dispute to the credit reporting agency. I found a template for such a letter at this URLs:
http://credit.about.com/cs/consumeraction/a/blltrdis1.htm
http://credit.about.com/cs/consumeraction/a/blltrdis3.htm

I think, also, that you may add any items relevant to your credit report, such as your side of this issue, that must be maintained in your credit file.

The fine print ...

Back from WSP 2006

Posted By Louis Marchesi

Monday through Thursday the skies were absolutely spectacular. We even managed to get some observing in on Friday night before it got a bit damp. We had to head back on Saturday.

Why do I need HELP? Well, I've contracted latitude sickness. My tan is fading. I'm frozen, even in my house (the lows at the WSP were higher than the temp I keep my house in winter).

I wanted to break out a scope and do some viewing but the howling wind and sub-freezing temperatures ... well I wimped out. What can I do to get back to observing?
