Charley McCarthy

You are correct.

Edgar Bergen is actually a committee, I believe. Cheney, Rowe, Rumsfeld, and others form the committee, depending on the subject at hand. I think Cheny is the committee quarterback, and calls most of the plays.

For Bush to make a cogent, coherent speech, he needs a teleprompter, plus a couple of practice rounds going through the speech in private, before going public with it.

Watch him when he talks and he's not in front of a podium, like he's done on his recent trips to Katrina disaster sites. He has a tough time at it. By his own admission, he's not very swift on his feet when it comes to talking without preparation.

mission from God - Blues Brothers have an ally

Posted By jaroslav zaharchuk

It makes one wonder if other voices talk to him as well, trying to tell him what he should do? Maybe the devil also tries to influence him?

Q.1 - Isn't it frightening, when our president - the head of the most powerful nation on earth - with over 12,000 nuclear weapons of all sorts at his disposal, is listening to voices - his God - who is telling George what to do, and George is following his God's orders?!!!

Q.2 - Is there some sort of mental illness associated with one hearing voices (his God in this case) that tells one what to???

Q.3 - Is this constitutional, i.e., is there somehow a conflict regarding church and state when the President is taking orders from the head of his religion?

mission from God - Blues Brothers have an ally

Well said, Nils. I trust life goes well for you.

I only hope you are correct, and it is true that he's not really hearing his creator speaking to him, and following his creator's orders, as he was quoted to have said in the media.

I believe that what he was purported to have said might well be true, because (as I recall) he had briefly talked along somewhat similar lines, i.e., mission from God type talk, a year or two ago in one of his speeches.

I have had some unsettling experiences with two people during my life, both very intelligent individuals, who have had such delusions. They can appear to be completely normal almost all of the time, and then they can go off half-cocked in the most bizarre (and potentially harmful)ways.

What is a lie?

Posted By jaroslav zaharchuk

It makes one wonder if, to justify their war, the Bush administration hadn't used torture to get the Al Qaeda operative to say what they wanted him to say, in this case to "confess" (under torture) that there were WMD's in Iraq, when there weren't any WMD's there to begin with.

With the use of torture, people can be made to say anything you want them to say.

I read in today's paper that McCain introduced a no-torture provision in another defense appropriations bill, much to the chagrin of the Bush-pro-torture gang (that includes Cheney and Rumsfield, of course).

H Highstone is gone

I enjoyed many of Herb Highstone's posts. Some were controversial, but many were informative. I wonder if he was removed as part of the email-abuse-cleanup thing that Herb (the Astromart Herb) has been doing?

Viet Nam?

Posted By jaroslav zaharchuk

The reason for the Viet Nam war was based upon a concept called the Domino Theory.

Washington strategists had theorized that if South Viet Nam fell, the rest of SE Asia would soon thereafter fall to Communism, and it would spread all over the free world, and we would soon be fighting the Commies in our streets. So, the Washington propaganda machine had us believe it was better to fight them in Viet Nam than in San Diego and Chicago.

History has since proved the theory to have been wrong.

Pretty much of the rest of the free world saw through the fallacy of the Domino Theory, that's why we pretty much did it alone in VN. As is the situation today in Iraq, we twisted the arms of a few flunky countries to fight there with us in VN, like the Aussies and S. Koreans, and while their soldiers fought valiantly as individuals, the contributions made by our allies there were incidental.

Washington used the same stories then that they're currently telling us about the middle east, about the need to spread democracy there, so as to keep us safe at home. Instead of the Commies being our enemies who wanted to enslave us, and who had these Gulags where they tortured people, we now have the insurgents and terrorists who want to blow us up. An interesting twist is that we're now the ones now doing the torturing....

In VN, most of the population there was not with us. Similarly today, the majority of the population in Iraq is not with us. Throughout the middle east and the rest of the world for that matter, the people are not with us, and we are seen as aggressors and occupiers, being there under false pretenses, Afghanistan excepted.

Palin and the European press

Posted By jaroslav zaharchuk

Go on Wikipedia and look up the bios on Thatcher and Merkel, two recent female European heads of state.
Then, compare same to Palin's bio.
Little wonder things are so screwed up here.
We are collectively incapable of choosing competent leadership, or the system has become so convoluted as to prevent same.

Obama Promises Tol Bankrupt Coal Industry

Posted By jaroslav zaharchuk

I believe your title/subject is a non sequitur; the title does not follow from the text in the body of your post.

In today's news, VeraSun Energy Corp., a large ethanol biofuels producer in South Dakota, just filed chapter 11; this is capitalism at work.

For new-build, coal-fired generating plants, the situation would not be much different. Huge capital investment in plant and equipment, with long-term P&L risk for many reasons.

Check out the following, from the U.S. Department of Energy: http://www.netl.doe.gov/coal/refshelf/ncp.pdf . More coal just ain't the way to go (long-term, for electrical power generation), it seems.

Shouldn't those who pollute the most, pay the most? And, shouldn't those who pollute the least, pay the least?

What would you propose as an alternative? Let everybody pollute as much as they want?

I am really not looking to argue with you, but I would be interested as to what you would suggest as an alternative.

Personally, I think nuclear might be better.
