Problems Computer Guiding... Ruber Band effect?

Posted By Danny Vettoretti

What version of firmware do you have? Weasner's site has a posting on issues with the 30.xx series of software. 26.xx seems to be more stable.

Binoviewing with a 6" Refractor

Posted By Danny Vettoretti

I tried a TV BVer with Naglers on my AR-6. It ended up making the scope being pretty heavy and the BV setup was not stable mounted on my WO diagonal. The diagonal always wanted to rotate down due to the weight of the BV setup. I could not tighten the 2 set screws on the focuser enough manually to keep the diagonal from rotating. An option would be to remove the BV setup when slewing, center with a single eyepiece and then remount the BVers. Kind of tedious though not to mention the scope balancing issues. No problems when using the TV BV on my Meade SN-8 because there is no diagonal needed.

Chromacor/Denk OCS coexistence...

Posted By Danny Vettoretti

Why not use a V-block filter? Discussions credit this solution to give 90% of the results of a Chromacor at 10% the price. A recent Sky and Telescope had an in-depth article on these filters.

Question about Meade AR6

Posted By Danny Vettoretti

The AR-6 is a large heavy scope. I have owned one and now own a Meade Mak 7. The C8 tube would be the same size as my Mak 7 with similar optical performance. I would definitely recommend the C8 over the AR-6 for the following reasons.
It's lighter, smaller, better light gathering, no achromatic problems and from reading forums - better optics. Go for the C8 IMHO.

Good & upgradable telescope for beginners

Posted By Danny Vettoretti

I have the LXD-55 with the SN-8 tube.
I like the mount and for the price cannot be beat. The LXD75 will be a step up to mine. I would recommend the following.
Buy the LXD75 and the AR5. Gets you into a pretty good refractor at the right price.
Then you can go after a cat reflector tube such as Celestron 9.25 which the mount should handle no problem.
I attached a picture of my Meade Mak 7" on the LXD55 mount with tube rings and dovetail.

What to buy?

Posted By Danny Vettoretti

Take a look at my setup. You can get this setup with an LXD75 AR5 and then get a Meade Mak 7" tube with rings for about $2,000 all in.
Tube only Mak is the way to go. No weight in the tube that causes long cool down. With the fan on, about 1/2 hour cool down.

grab and go scope

Posted By Danny Vettoretti

Televue 85

Televue build quality, Televue Optics, F7 which IMHO is an ideal compromise between wide field and planetary viewing in a small refractor. Also keeps the grab and go in mind as it keeps the tube short. Consistently excellent reviews and can be had for a reasonable price used on AM. The 85 mm gives 12.9% better light gathering vs. 80mm scopes. More aperature helps at this size.
There is a reason they go quickly when they come up for sale on AM.

GPU Refractors

It's a new company and with subsequent messages from the author of the article, it does not appear he even has even taken delivery of the scope yet. It is still being completed. My suggestion is to do the same thing as with any new wizz bang product. Allow some time for production models and potential issues to hit the streets and forums, then make your purchase decision.

My 2 cents worth.
