"Amy Coney Barrett belongs to a “small, tightly knit Christian group called People of Praise,” The New York Times reported in September 2017. According to The Times, the group’s members “swear a lifelong oath of loyalty, called a covenant, to one another, and are assigned and are accountable to a personal adviser, called a ‘head’ for men and a ‘handmaid’ (now woman leader) for women. The group teaches that husbands are the heads of their wives and should take authority over the family.” The Times indicated that Amy Barrett’s family has deep ties to the group.

The tenets of her religious affiliation are sexist.  She is to be subservient to her husband.  He is the head of the household.  She believes these things to be true and right and correct by being a member of the affiliation.  I pointed this out with some snark about her having to consult her husband on Supreme Court matters.  Of course she won't actually do that..

"Each member has someone called a "head", who acts as a personal adviser. In general, heads give encouragement, correction, and help in decision-making. Men have other men as their heads. Married women are headed by their husbands."

I'm not against her because she is a woman (that would be sexist) but because I fear she will bring the sexism of her particular faith into her decisions on the bench.

I would be against a person of either sex who gets that SC seat and makes decisions that erode the rights of women.

Definitely not sexism on my part.

The election possibilities...

Posted By David Cotterell

Civics 101 for the foreign exchange student....

I'm trying to make sure I have all the possibilities......

If a Candidate wins the Electoral college and either wins the popular vote or loses the popular vote.  This person wins the election and becomes/remains President...

Or, looking at it from the losing standpoint, if a candidate loses the Electoral College and either wins the popular vote or loses the popular vote,  this person loses the election and cannot be President.

Apparently a 269-269 tie in the Electoral College can occur.  The House of Representatives would then vote to determine a winner.  The D's have a majority in the house - so Biden would prevail...

Election night will be a nail-biter, that's for sure.  A Trump loss in the College despite a popular vote majority would be the most ironic outcome...

My prediction?  There will be a few grumpy old men here on  AM Politics when the result is finalized...

Trump would be secured as President in that case.  That is the First case and the only case that would happen in the case of a 269-269 tie.
Just trying to learn here, Richard....thanks for your knowledgeable assistance.

Here's the quote which backs up your correction:

But in choosing the President, the votes shall be taken by states, the representation from each state having one vote; a quorum for this purpose shall consist of a member or members from two-thirds of the states, and a majority of all the states shall be necessary to a choice.

And then you say the R's have 26 delegates and the D's 23*.   How are these determined?  Maybe i have this figured out: if a state had 18 delegates to the House and 15 of them were D's would that state then be considered D for the tie-breaking vote?   Some states like Wyoming have only one House seat so obviously that vote would go to the party of that one rep.

A tie is unlikely, though....

* 26+23 is only 49.   which state doesn't get a vote in this scenario?

So much to learn...

Trump tests positive for Covfefe

Posted By David Cotterell

Trump tweeted that he and Melania have tested positive for Covid..

I have been unable to find independent corroboration of this up to now (10am EDT).  So only his tweet saying so exists.

Nevertheless....

How will the election be affected if  he gets extremely ill?   If he dies?  Are there constitutional rules that would kick in?  DJT has co-morbidities of age and obesity which could come into play so this is not at all a far-fetched scenario...

If he dies or is incapacitated does Pence become the presidential candidate - (then who for VP?)?   Or does the entire P-VP ticket become invalid?  Who then would run for the R's?

Could he have passed it on  to Biden during the debate?  A remote chance that both Trump and Biden fall ill....one or both dies.....  then what?

Could the election be postponed?

Dave

thanks, James for your informative posts.

Trump's Doctor Says Diagnosis is 72 Hours old - so Wednesday DJT knew he was ill...his people knew too.

Posted By David Cotterell

The Doctor's presser clearly states "72 hours into the diagnosis".   72 hours before right now as I post this, 2:10pm EDT Saturday Oct 3, was 2:10pm EDT WEDNESDAY Sept 30.  Doctor's statement was some hours ago today.......    So earlier in the day on Wednesday.  Wed. morning sometime.  Just 12-16 hours after the debate....

Here's the doctor in his own words: https://twitter.com/NBCNews/status/1312425617737027587

Trump knew he was positive from Wednesday.  And he carried on as normal at various campaign functions....

Significant chance he already had the virus Tuesday night....

Are they wilfully negligent or just plain stupid?
