What are my options ?

Posted By Mike Strieber

Fred Dase said:

I think I know the answer to this question, but I'll ask since alot of you seem more knowledgable about the way the government works.

I'm a US Senator (makes no difference what party) I'm given a top secret briefing. In this briefing I'm told that the current administration is doing something I think is or should be illegal such as torture, political assassination.
What are my options? Would I go to jail and/or be charged with treason or would I be protected under the whistleblower laws if I made this knowledge public?

Fred Dase

I can tell you for certain what not to do; follow Pelosi's example.

You would have an obligation to report illegal activity. There are ways to do so even in the "secret world". That doesn't include running to the nearest podium and news camera. Just as with the military where orders are in essense laws, a soldier has an obligation to not follow one that is illegal and to report illegal activities even if done under the guise of orders from a superior officer. Disclosing classified material to the public is not the right way to go about it and if that was the approach you took I think you would be reprimanded in some fashion, regardless if you were right or wrong. I don't think "whistleblower" laws pertain to national secrets; there are proper ways for individuals with access to them to report their concerns.

Re: Thanks Obama

On hot button issues like abortion, Obama and the rest of the whacked out left may be beginning to lose ground. The values and craziness of liberal and socialist policies are on full display now that Democrats are in complete control of the government. In such a short time in complete control, the nation is tanking in so many ways. The loony left can blame past administrations all that they like, but the public is slowly beginning to understand the truth of the insane ideology put forth by Obama and his loony followers.

The following article shows that as Dems have become more of a dominate and now total force, more people for the first time identify themselves as pro-life.

http://www.gallup.com/poll/118399/More-Americans-Pro-Life-Than-Pro-Choice-First-Time.aspx

Maybe putting an insane socialist dictator like Obama in as President is the best thing for the revival of a conservative philosophy. After all who would have thought that anyone could have spent more money than Bush?

Yet again , you are sticking your nose where it does not belong. You "anti-abortionist" folks seem to forget something. You are not married to every woman in America, nor is every woman in America your puppet that has to do as you please. Its none of you damn business what the lady down the street, or on the other side of the country does. That decision is between a woman and her partner (if applicable).

Answer me this, why is it that the same people that are anti abortion, are by and large, the same people that advocate torture, the death penalty, and the invasion of Iraq resulting the the deaths of countless civilian children?

The answer is simple...Hypocracy in the purist form.

Tony,
Do you really think pro-life people advocate their position in an effort to control women? What are the pro-life women after, "puppets also"? If that's your understanding of pro-life thinking I believe you're really missing the point and thus can make an odd assertion as you did. People against abortion are that way because they believe it is a baby being killed, a human being like you and me. So using your logic then one shouldn't intervene when that woman down the street is being murdered by her husband because it's none of their business. That's between her and her partner, so don't stick your nose in it. Obama said today that the issue of abortion will never be reconciled. Your post certainly reinforces that statement.

Pinocchio, Snow White, and Superman...

Dave Snope said:

Pinocchio, Snow White, and Superman are out for a stroll in town one day. As they walked, they come across a sign: "Beauty contest for the most beautiful woman in the world."

"I am entering!" said Snow White. After half an hour she comes out and they ask her, "Well, how'd ya do?"

"First Place!" said Snow White.

They continue walking and they see a sign: "Contest for the strongest man in the world."

"I'm entering," says Superman. After half an hour, he returns and they ask him, "How did you make out?"

"First Place," answers Superman. "Did you ever doubt?"

They continue walking when they see a sign: "Contest! Who is the greatest liar in the world?" Pinocchio enters.

After half an hour he returns with tears in his eyes.

"What happened?" they asked.

"Who the hell is this Nancy Pelosi?" asked Pinocchio.

Excellent Dave! ...and she is going to get away with it; Democrats have a tendency look the other way about lying, perjury, etc. at least when it's one of their own.

Is the Lunt 50mm supposed to be this good?

Posted By Mike Strieber

Philip Blanda said:

X-posted. Apologies if you've seen this before but I want Amart to have more discussions, so I'll contribute my own here, for what it's worth.

I had my 50mm Lunt filter (LS50FHa/B600) out today (5/23/2009) and the seeing was fairly decent. The mottling displayed across the solar disk was even and sharp, the larger active region had a nice dark condensation and was very prominent, and prominences where visible at several points which including a large faint swarm of them together and three small but bright other ones.

Is a 50mm supposed to be this good? I was mostly viewing at 25X to get a full solar disk. This filter is the best astro bargain I ever got at my pre-order price of $699.

Philip

Philip,
I don't have a Lunt but understand them to be a high quality piece of equipment. There are a number of Lunt users over at Cloudy Nights and they all seem to have nothing but good things to say. It's certainly not unheard of to have gotten your hands on a "special" one. I remember folks making claims like this with Coronado products also. Can't speak to yours specifically but if you're that pleased with it then certainly you made a good choice. BTW, I have a double-stacked Solarmax 60 I've had for over five years now, from the good ole days at Coronado and I've been extremely pleased with it. Here's a couple shots I took today, in bad seeing. Enjoy your scope.

So What's Your State Doing?

What is your home state doing to deal with the recession?
A nice article by CNN with a map that you can click on state by state to see the number of jobs provided the stimulus, number of bank failures, foreclosures and unemployment figures. Michigan is closing prisons but the article isn't clear on where the prisoners are going. (Maybe we need a map for that, too.)
http://money.cnn.com/2009/06/05/news/economy/Michigan_closes_prisons/index.htm?postversion=2009060614
I'd also be interested in knowing what kind of jobs the stimulus is providing.

I understand ACORN is welcoming all the released prisoners. A few have been offered cabinet positions also.

Obama

Kudos to Obama for being such a strong leader in one of the most difficult times (economic, and otherwise) this country has faced in its history. Considering his overall lack of experience, as well as his controvercial methods of engaging the country he is doing a great job. Obama certainly making lemonade out of the lemons left to him by the previous administration. I am very glad I voted for him and will certainly do so again in 2012! grin I shudder to think of where we would be today if Mccain and Palin had won the election.

I am one of the many Moderates that are glad our voices were heard and someone stepped up with the ability to move this country in the right direction into the future, instead of keeping us mired in 20th century outdated ideology and policy. We need to take a progressive path to a sustainable vibrant future, Obama is making this happen. Kudos to the majority of Americans that agreed with me!

Unfortunately Tony, the number of Americans who agree with you is dwindling. Based on the Obama fever of November last, I would have thought him to be a shoe-in for a second term. I'm not so sure now.

McCain On Larry King Live

Posted By Mike Strieber

Rod Kaufman said:

Anybody else catch John McCain on Larry King Live last night? McCain made me sick. The segment was a tribute to Ted Kennedy and what does McCain do? He turns it into a plug against federal health care overhaul by falsely claiming it funds abortions! Of course none of the proposals do, although I wish they did:
http://www.factcheck.org/2009/07/surgery-for-seniors-vs-abortions/
I mean the guy was purportedly on Larry King Live to pay tribute to the memory of Ted Kennedy as a friend and fellow senator and, instead, everybody gets a boatload of BS.
Geez...

Rod,
My goodness. What McCain says really doesn't bother me as much as the fact you can stomach watching Larry King. That dude is creepy; the King of creep in fact.
